[Closed] Santa Cruz bronson chain noise

Hi All.

The chain on my bronson is pretty noisy. There are also marks on my driveside spokes from the chain. The clutch switch is in the 'on' position.... Chain is long enough so that the mech is not over-stretched at full travel in biggest cog. I'm tempted to mod the xtr rear mech with a short cage and spring from a zee mech.

Setup:
1x10
11-36t cassette
Hope narrow wide 32t chainring
E13 srs+
Shimano xtr shadow plus medium cage.
Sram hollowpin chain.
Chain and seat stays wrapped in inner tube.

Any suggestions on how to quieten the bike? My previous sworks enduro (with a very similar setup) was much quieter.

Cheers. J

Have you checked the clutch tension as its adjustable?

Also check the clutch still works.

I'm sure you can take a few links out of your chain; you will never use full travel on your biggest cog.

Clutch definitely still works.

I've seen the adjuster. I'll try to tighten it a bit

I ride a lot of trialsy stuff so bottoming out the bike in first does happen.

Thanks for the replies.

It's a by product of a narrow wide ring. Both mine make the same racket, it's better when the chain isn't covered in slop but never properly silent. Made worse if you're at the top or bottom of the block. Keep the chain clean and well lubed and turn you iPod up a bit louder*

*works for me

EDIT: very much dependant on the chain line too. Hence why it might be louder on the Santa Cruz

LoL at one reply in there...

If you have chain marks on your spokes your mech is over shifting and coming into contact with your spokes or your chain is bouncing back up when in the largest rear cog and hitting the spokes. First get this resolved by adjusting the limit screw or removing some links.

Narrow wide rings do not produce more noise when clean and well oiled but they do need a good chainline. They actually support your chain more but they do need to be clean as the wider teeth will press dirt and grit into the wider links and cause noise.

On my SC I found the chain hit the reinforcement plate under the drive side chain stay. I have put a small peice of copter tape to stop the noise. The chain can get this whip effect where the mech doesn't have enough tension and constant hits cause the chain to bounce up and down more. Increasing the mech tension for the clutch helped but didn't remove it totally.

I've since converted the rear mech to short cage, removed some chain links, increased the clutch spring tension and wrapped the chain suck plate area in inner tube.

The noise is a lot better but not perfect.

The marks on the spokes are due to the chain rattling around, not from over shifting.

I think the different wheel path on the enduro results in a quieter chain. Possibly due to less chain growth.

Eichler, nothing to do with you chain noise post sorry, but notice you gone from a enduro sworks to a bronson, how do you find that change? Any pros or cons? Have considered the change myself.

Cheers
