Hi,

I'm just about to get my grubby hands on my new steel steed, and I'm dithering over what to treat the inside of the frame with. On my last frame I just used an aerosol type oil (Finesse multilube stuff), but I would be keen to seek some other suggestions. I know about Weigle Frame Saver but tbh I would be keen to try something else. Anyone ever used linseed oil?

Any suggestions appreciated.

ta,

andy

I just used Waxoyl, a car treatment. It certainly stops rust but dont use too much as if it melts it can run inside the frame and get into bbs and headsets if they are not well sealed. I use the aerosol version and just spray a bit into eack section with a thin tube borrowed from my TFT2 spray.

One other thing people mention is that if you have filled your frame with wax, a respray will be difficult as the baking process will make the wax run.. maybe just pre-heat it and run the wax out first before having a respray!!

I think linseed oil should be left for cricket bats...it probably has no effect on rust!!

I used a waxoil aerosol. Warm up the frame with a hairdryer, apply waxoil, then warm again till the waxoil gets runny and just tip the frame up till the waxoil runs out / into any dead ends etc. Leave to cool then build up! Don't use to much. No rust after 2yrs.

Still have a 1989 Scott with a tange infinity frame kept in the shed and has not rusted through yet.. . if you ride it often enough it should have gone out of fashion and look a bit bent by the tie the rust has any effect on its performance.. spend the money on beer and put the additional weight where you can enjoy it most.... anyone know what spray to stop my aluminium frame fatiguing?

I think a tad too much fuss is made over this. Your frames going to last years anyway. If you want it to be pristine for more than twenty years it's probably better not to use it.
Example, 1975 cross bike finally went in 2008. Old 1992 Kona still going (not in my hands though) my 1989 Gios still going and the only rust damage on that is from sweat when Turbo'ing, my old 2001 Inbred which had a very hard life showed no sign of rust when I wrapped it round a tree and snapped a stay.

Yep, don't bother. I've had 4 or 5 steel frames, including an Orange Clockwork from 1994. No treatment, no bother.
I do occasionally spray GT85 into the tubes, then remove seatpost and sit the bike upside down.
