im having a wee problem with my inbred 29er which gets ridden about scotland in the rain and then stored inside my flat. there is rust and rusty goo (presumably rust and grease) inside the seattube - enough that it has stripped some of the anodising off the bottom of my thompson seatpost and just looks nasty and not very healthy
the bike gets washed (in the shower) after dirty rides and like i said is stored inside
i have tried spraying loads of wd40 down the seattube and leaving it to drip out to clear what rust is already there and i always grease the seatpost before i put it in.
is there anything i can do to clear the rust and stop it from coming back. is it really a problem? internet opinions seem to range from 'you must framesave a steel frame' to 'the amount of rust possible inside a steel frames tubes has no discernable effect on strength etc'

Don't On-one dip their frames in something to protect the metal?
Buy an innertube, cut about a foot off, remove seatpost, slide tube over seatpost, ziptie at the top, reinsert seatpost, pull down excess to cover seat clamp area.
Bingo no more water in your seat tube, unless you have a seatpost with a hole at the top, in which case ram a wine cork up the ****er.
My inbred frame is 5 years old, and exactly the same as yours around the seatpost, I thought I should probably get worried as I ride with loads of seatpost showing and kept checking it.
So far sweet FA has happened except my seatpost is more scuffed as over here we go up a big hill, then down again - so the anodising is battered because I put the seat up and down so often.
tbh I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought if I was you.
Drill a small hole in the BB shell to drain the water (if its out of warranty that is).
Or take the seatpost out after wet rides so the water can evaporate.
