I want to run 22t inner rings on my Shimano double chainsets. Then only 22t rings I can find state they can only be used on the 3x chainsets. Is there any reason they won't work on the double chainsets? And can the XT rings be used on the XTR chainsets? Am talking about XTR Race M9000 chainset and XT M8000 double.
Cheers
You'll be fine, robcolliver does exactly that and he's travelled '000s miles.
Get a steel one since the XT aluminium ones are soft.
Haven't the new XT and XTR rings got a funny fitting? They seem to have a funny reference after them such as AR (for the XTR) and BA (for XT). Though the BCD appears the same.....
I think (although this isn't definitive) that XTR M9000 has a funny pattern. Don't know about M8000 but it is a bit of a minefield.
24T and an expander cog at the rear could give you same range..
I want to keep the XTR 40t at the back and didn't want the faff of a 46t retro fit. I like the close ratio at the back. But cheers.
you want a 22:40 low ratio? How fast can you spin your legs?
The problem with running such a small ring is it can be quite a jump to the larger ring hence why on a 3x it works as you are only going 22-32-44 (9 speed) and 24-32-42 10 speed is noticeably smoother due to only being 8T. Most 2x tend to have a 10T jump, some 12T. If you are running a 36 or 38T main ring than the jump is over this.
24:36 on my 29er is too spinny for me.
That aside the M7000, M8000 and M9000 chainsets have asymmetric bolt patterns so older 104/64 bcd rings wont fit as far as I know, although not 100% sure on the grannies.
I also thought the smallest available in 2x was 24T. There's a 22T for 3x cranks but I've no idea whether or not it would work.
AFAIK the bolt pattern is the same on M9000 and M8000.
The riding I am doing has a lot of climbing. Some of it with a loaded bike. You can never have enough gears on the way up. I have ridden a 22:42 before and it has not been too spinny. Not after over 7000m of ascent in a day.
Bolt pattern the same, but chainring bolt holes are different diameters to suit the hardware that comes with the cranks.
For some reason I have a suspicion that the 2x xtr front mech can only handle a 10t chainring size difference. If you didn't want to get to the smaller cassette cogs then this might not matter, but could compromise the chain line a bit.
How about a Rotor Qring for the smaller chainring? It was my solution to put on a 25t qring and it's been utterly brilliant
I've fitted the Race Face Ride 10 Speed Chainring Set to my XT 2x10. Its got a steel 22T and an aluminium 36T ring, had them fitted since December and all good so far. Around £40 from CRC so good value I thought.
by hardware do you mean bolts?
Bolts and the tapped holes on the spider to mount the ring - aye.
Almost edited my post as it sounded w*nky, but couldn't be arsed!
20T doval ovals available here... 8)
id quite like to try one with an Eagle cassette.. 😈
Had 22-44 setup once and it could climb walls! (slghtly spinny though.. 😆 )
