Columnists are employed to be controversial and he probably doesn't mean a word of it. I have a friend who has a column in a local paper and regularly writes stuff to wind people up. The paper loves it because it causes debate and raises the newspapers profile. It's really not worth thinking about.

He has a point though, why not hold the event on country lanes, surely a more appropriate location, rather than annoy the townsfolk?

Because its a criterium! Its supposed to be in a town centre! The idea is to bring the racing to the spectators! most of the big ones get big crowds!

Yeah, just think how much traffic that'll drum up by the time every cyclist with an internet connection has had that come round - all those page impressions are probably doing wonders for ad revenue!
What's more worrying is the few that do read this tripe and carry that belief around with them.
There's a female bus driver in Bristol I've seen going round deliberately running cyclist off the road (myself included) - I've seen the same one do it three times on Park Street alone but I've yet to be quick enough to catch the route number...
I went to school with the so called "journalist" He was a c*ck at school and he is still a c*ck! Oh and 80% of the route was on a pedestrianised area anyway so the disruption was along a quater mile piece of road in a town that no right thinking person would want to drive to anyway!

The guy is just doing his job - he is paid to be controversial. If it's cycling this week it will be dog walkers next week.
I went to the race - it was great, a thousand plus spectators and a brilliant event at the heart of the city.
His paper gave the event really good coverage in the build up and a very positive review in both the news and sports sections after the event.
The guy is just a loud mouth idiot - small town hack trying to be Clarkson.
