Seen some brand new RS7's (arms only) for £100 and as I feel my truativ powerspline BB isn't going to last much longer and I might as well get a new chainset.
Was going to get new SLX chainset for £90 inc BB but like the idea of having a pair of RS7's for 10 years on an xc bike. (xxxxxxc, aggressive xc powerxc - basically more towards all mountain than xc racing)

Are ISIS BB's all that bad?
How tough are RS7's? I've never broken a crank arm and am only 11 stone.

Or shall I just stick with the SLX idea?

Cheers

RS7 cranks are bombproof - also warrantied for every type of riding (check the Middleburn website to confirm) - very good cranks, last very well, look very good and are light but stiff. I loved mine...

Can't comment on ISIS from personal experience but from riding mates experience they tend to be replaced every 3 months...

Hi, I have a pair and am usig an isis BB. ISIS is pretty bad but superstar make a isis bb the same way shimano made square tapers. the bearings run directly on the axle meaning much larger bearings can be used. killed fsa, truvativ, and crank bros in under 4 months of use but the superstar is going strong at nearly a year with no sign of play.

hope this helps!

My singlespeed has an ISIS crankset on it - it was lying around in the bits box when I got the frame and I wanted to get it built asap. Since thenI've changed the forks, handlebars, wheels, forks and tyres, but the BB is still the same. I've abused it like a bastard and it's been fine.

typical pose:

I use a race face isis bb with replaceable bearings. Two bearing races per side. Initial cost is highish, but replacement bearings every 18 months are only £15. I've been running the same axle and cups for 7 years.

SKF make a bombproof isis bb.

I have an ISIS RS7 on my Nicolai and it is amazing - never a single issue and the SKF BB is still perfect. Do it.

There's nothing wrong with ISIS, but the BB has to be made properly. You get what you pay for.

Didn't know that about the RaceFace - thanks mcmoonter.

I've got raceface isis signature bottom bracket which was from the first batch of isis stuff in the UK (very old) bearings have been replaced once and it's still going strong. There is an injection port so you can purge the whole thinbg with fresh grease which I do a couple of times a year.

Sounds good. thanks all.
This needs serious thought, not just a "oh that'd be nice to have" thought...
