[Closed] Rockshox Pike Fork Servicing Problem

Hi all,

Tried servicing my forks last night, however when turning the forks upside down to pour the oil in and then tighten I noticed that the rubber bumper stops had flipped over and am now unsure as to whether they are correctly in place on the damper rods etc. I am concerned they are just floating about in the fork leg. Is there any way of knowing of whether they're in place correctly?

Pull the lowers off and push them to the bottom of the lower legs with something like a length of dowl, when at the bottom push round the edge of bumper to make sure seated flat, they should centralize and be fine for refitting.

Ok, the problem is that once the forks are turned upside down to insert oil the bumpers (not sure on exact name) dont remain in position and flip about :-/

They should stay in position when seated correctly, as quite a tight fit in lowers.
You could try a spoke (L shaped end)or bit of coat hanger, though the lower hole to pull them back into place and work round seating them

I think they may have bent being rubber, they appeared to have moved up the leg when viewed with a torch? Any further help would be appreciated.

I've always re-seated them with a small L-shaped allen key (pull from through the hole). As for whether they go back in upside down or not, I have no idea and I've never checked the orientation. I've never had problems so assume it doesn't matter.

I may have misunderstood (brandy content) but as long as you've put the fork back together correctly then I'd have thought using them world sort the problem the second you bottom out?

Hmm, people may have misunderstood, my concern is that the damping rods etc have not passed through the hole in the bumper due to the bumper falling down the leg! It certainly didn't pass correctly through it once but not sure whether its seated correctly now?

I think I threaded the rubber bump stops over the damper rods before putting the lowers on. Bottoming out the first time will set them in the right place

New ones will sit firmly in the lowers once seated as they're an interferance fit.

That seems like an idea threading them on the rods, will try next time, so there's no way of knowing whether they're OK now? I did read somewhere on the net of a similar question which had a response that stated that the foot nuts wouldn't tighten if they weren't in place?? This does seem to relate to what occurred with mine as one of the times I wasn't sure and the foot nuts wouldn't tighten, I disassembled and rebuilt and everything was OK. Is this a way of telling?

If you've managed to tighten up the bottom bolts to the correct torque then it's hard to imagine that the bump stops are not flat at the bottom of the legs and threaded over the rods. They might be upside down but if so you'll only lose a mm or two of travel at the very end of the stroke. And if you are using that then you'll probably have other things on your mind
