So you can spot the mtber masquerading as a roadie (and vice versa).

Also, you tend to be more upright on an mtb so need a visor to keep sun out of your eyes - on a road bike you get neck ache trying to tilt your head back to see past a visor. And a visor does help direct twigs and stuff up and over your head as well, off road.

For mud / rain - helps keep it out of your eyes. also cuts your nose when you crash. I have removed mine for this reason

roadies have those little hats which match their pro team kit. mtbers don't wear pro issue team kit, so can't co-ordinate their hat.

Mine cut my forehead just above my eyebrows. I now havea long narrow scar.

I bought a helmet with a different design where it looks like it'll slide towards the top of the hat rather than down and off the front.

The difference is style-driven IMO, I never remove the peak on my road rides.

There was me thinking you had a road bike with a proper position rather than a stack of headset spacers. Do you not get a crick in your neck?

I never use my peak for off-road rides, and can't say I miss it.

Makes it more difficult to look ahead on the road just by moving your eyes rather than shifting your head too. Ok for short rides but i tend to get a stiff neck after about an hour if i'm riding on the road with a peak on the helmet.

There was me thinking that you had an mtb with a proper position rather than somethign with a slammed stem and no headset spacers. Do you not find you go over the bars on downhill sections?

mtb helmets seem often to be overbuilt for the sake of "mtb gnarr style" or whatever. Smells like marketing to me. Anyway, I use a peak-less road helmet for on and off-road stuff. Much lighter than mtb helmets I've had in the past.

Oh - is that the point of a helmet peak? I'll have to try using one as a skill compensator.

I have to have one headset spacer so the end of the bars don't hit the top tube ๐Ÿ˜‰

But as an mtber, surely you are gnarr? And if you're not, you're either doing it wrong or you work in IT. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I like the idea of a helmet that covers more of your head, especially at the back. Road helmets seem to be quite fashion-driven too, you'll have a hard time finding one that doesn't try to give the impression it was designed using a wind tunnel.

hmm that could be my problem. Not much "gnar" going on, and I may work in IT ๐Ÿ™‚

Visor would be a nightmare for me on the road, especially when tucked in descending. I generally run without a peak off-road to as can't say it does anything for me.

My road bike is sans rear wheel just now, otherwise I'd check my position out and post it up.

It may not be the most aero, but it'll be better than most new bikes I see with HTs about 3" bigger than mine, and with the ultimate faux pas of stis pointed vertically upwards.
