a while ago i bought some shimano hollowtech ext BB's from someone off of here, no mention of them being road cups and i just presumed they'd be MTB cups being as this is a MTB forum.
mate pops round tonight i show him the cups and he duly notes that they are indeed road cups and the width of the cups is different.

will they fit? if not i'll be hunting someone down who should've known better as he knew they were for my mtb!!!

any help most appreciated

Surely they fit but just don't screw in as far?

i think the answer is no but not sure why. Probably as stated in your question that the width is different

I thought they were wider - only because somebody said so on here once

yes they are around 1mm wider so presumably you would lose 2mm ish of the axle length,

really pi$$ed off with the guy who sold them to me now. and i cant find the thread he put up ages ago to contact him.

there's some xt ones on classifieds right now - assuming James had more than 1 set - your bearings'll prob fit them too when they wear out I'd GUESS
