Rimpact Original V2...

Rimpact Original V2 any experiences? Ditching inserts due to faff?

According to Rimpact, these "Original V2" are wider, tighter on the rim, and more resistant to stretch. Given my experience of fitting them and refitting V1s when swapping tyres, this sounds like everything I don't want! Anyone fitted them and found any difference in difficulty?

Following all the tips and having done it a few times, it takes me 3 hours to swap a pair of tyres with Original V1s. XM481 (30mm) and 2.4" DHR2/Dissector/Baron Projekt. Min tyre width on the V2 is 2.4" (was 2.3"), min rim width 25mm (was 23mm), so I'm guessing it's a tighter job.

I'm weighing up whether to ditch inserts altogether, stock up on a few sets of V1s while they're still available, trying my luck with the V2s when the time comes, or trying the new XC ones (1.5-2.35" tyre & 20-30mm rim). I'm on EXO casings, 70kg and not a hard charger, so they're really just in case and letting me drop pressures to 20f/22r psi instead of 23f/25r. Only got this one cut on the rear all year, not sure what the outcome would have been without any insert.

It should not take you that long.

Using the cushcore (?) tool and a bin makes it a lot easier once you get your technique sorted. If it is still hard you can use a soapy water squirter.

Definitely should not take that long. Maybe an extra minute on removal to push the first bead into the middle and under the insert and and extra few on insertion. That's with 30mm internal rims. I've not cut mine yet but have ridden or 3 times on a flat with just the insert (slashed sidewall, bent rim from sideways rock hit and damaged valve). All 3 could have been fixed on the trail but was easier to ride out.

I use v1 in xm481+Dissector or DHR2 or Eliminator. Not had any issues with any combo. Maybe its other inserts that can cause trouble, but I dont find them any more difficult that without TBH. Just push the insert up into the tyre carcass which allows you to them get the bead into the centre of rim - as per any normal tubeless fitting.

I found the v1 inserts went a bit baggy over time, which just made them easier to fit.

Still using them now, migrated to front wheels with the Pro versions in the rears.

Almost identical wheel/tyre combo here. Its about an extra 30secs to remove (one more extra stage - pushing the bead under the rimpact). Easier inflation as the rimpact holds the tyre bead against the rim wall so it goes up with a track pump.

Although if that's the only nick you've got in the rear after a year's riding - I really wouldn't bother with an insert. The last time I had to open mine up was because I'd got a hard spot on the tyre I could feel when rolling along courtesy of all the bits of sliced off rimpact jamming up in one place. (lighter than you, but big travel bike and lots of rocks). Just stick 30psi in the back and be done with it.

agreed doing something drastically wrong for it take that amount of time, even new (v1) were easy enough with a round bin and some common sense......the hardest part is getting the tyre back off and getting the bear to snap out of place (but again a round bins helps with this...cant see how on earth it would take 3hrs

PS. If you're looking at ditching inserts, I'd recommend Schwalbe's new Supergravity carcass rear tyres.

I've been riding the Big Betty sans insert on some rather rocky trails and it's been impervious so far. Not light obvs.

More faff than they are worth.
Binned all of mine last year 👍

Supergravity MM/BB and rimpact v1 inserts... 🤪

It does mean I can run 17psi rear and 15psi front though! 😁

I did this job last week and even with weak girly hands which were also injured from falling off my road bike I still managed it in WAAAAAAAY less than 3 hours with V2 original's and XM481's just the same. Having said that I run the same tyres all year round, if I were changing frequently I'd be less inclined for the benefits considering I'm 62kgs and the last time I pinched was over 4 years ago.

So it's just me. Yes, breaking the bead to get them off is the hardest part. The Baron was the hardest to get on, and now it has a bit of a wobble in it. I'll probably try the swap once again, and if it's still not any easier try a couple of months without.

I’ve fitted four of the V2 fairly recently, not much faff at all, if I just keep working around the inserts and tyres. I really like them, I get to run the tyres at a pressure that I really like without destroying tyres and rims, gives decent stability too. I never found that sweet spot without inserts. 🙂

I’ve found getting the tyre off with an insert in not too bad - cushcore bead dropper helps you push the tyre away from the rim and under the insert.

I seem to struggle getting certain tyres on with a rimpact - managed ok with a 2.6”slaughter / 2.6” Forekaster / 2.3” dhr2 / 2.6” rekon. Failed with a 2.4” dissector and a 2.4” trail Kryptotal.

Tried feeding the tyre round to get some slack and also trying to get as much in the middle well of the rim.

All in either xm421 or xm481 rims.

First fitting is horrible. After use I presume they stretch - definitely much easier 2nd time onwards.
