hopefully changing from a mavic ex729 to an ex721. Will the same spokes be OK to reuse? I'm assuming that the same series rim, but different width, will have the same spoke length?

anyone know?

in theory yes you should be able to use the same spokes provide it has approx the same dimensions (from hub to rim centre) as the old one

A quick look at my copy of spocalc.xls tells me the Effective Rim Diameter of the EX729's is 537mm while the ERD of the EX721's is 534.5mm which equates to around a 1.3mm difference in spoke length.

This could be a little too close for comfort as you could find the nipple runs out of thread on the spoke and protrudes too far through the nipple.

If your nipples are 14mm then you could use 12mm nipples and all should be fine. Chain reaction use 14mm nipples on their custom built wheels.

Just tape your new rim to the old one lining up the valve hole and move 1 spoke over at a time and take it to your LBS for truing... Or buy Roger's book from wheelpro.co.uk and learn how to do it for yourself... easy peasy.

cheers for the info 🙂

I was hoping to do the tape and swap method, assuming the spokes will work. Last time I had a true and tension done it was only £8, which I thought was good value.

How do you measure the nipples? Is it a simple end to end measurement?

I'll try it and see if the spokes will work

yeah end to end. Personally i wouldnt reuse spokes tho. And expect a slap from the lbs if you lace it up and take it for truing lol 🙂

I'm skint at the moment, and the 729 is causing problems with tyre width so I'm after a cheap solution at the moment. I'll try it and see if it works.

Thanks for the info 🙂
