Off up north for client meeting in York and have the afternoon free so thinking of taking my bike up with me. Got dinner booked at friends in evening in Ripon so looking for ideas on something worth doing that is 2-3hrs ride subject to travel time.

Any ideas for close by?

Not much that's actually close, but a few options that you could do between York and Ripon.

For gentle stuff there's some pleasant stuff to be had ont he ridge north of Castle Howard - park here and loop around the bridleways north to the ridge, along etc.

Or for moorlandy stuff then parking at the Sutton Bank visitors centre here and picking up the Cleveland Way north towards Bolby Forest (stuff to be found in there) is a nice jaunt.

You'll probably want to print off a map for both those options I guess.

Dalby is the obvious option, but it's a fair round trip doing York-Dalby-Ripon. But yes, worth it if you feel you've got the time.

Look up Sutton Bank, and Boltby area. About 30mins north of York and about 20-30mins from Ripon. Good riding around the Cleveland way. Good decent through Boltby and Another on Black Hambleton. Plus a tech one at Sheepwash near Osmotherley. You could do a good 2 hour loop there.

Boltby is where the original Pace trails are. Still there.

if you like natural woodland.. try yearsley woods, at yearsley north of easingwold. it has plenty of singletrack if you search for it, not much flat and three lakes. worth a look on google maps.
ive used this place for over twenty years and never tire of it.

Plenty of pleasant bridleways to the North & West of Ripon itself. Good loop from Kirby Malzeard (about 7 miles from Ripon) over to Scar House Reservoir & back round.
I did a decent ride from Ripley & over to Brimham Rocks which was mainly offroad. Nothing fancy or very tech but 'nice'.
If I'd been off I would've guided you!

Dalby would be quite do able ... Visitor center to Ripon = about 1 hour

Or you could venture over to Stainburn just west of Harrogate, have a play about and about 25 minutes to Ripon after

Cheers all think Im gonna do the Sutton Bank ride and meet a friend who hates cycling and have a beer with her later before heading back to Ripon.

Don't want to upset anyone but Dalby black was ace but the red route was shockingly bland when I rode it last year and one I'll never do again so au-natural route for me gets the thumbs up!

I would have thought if you liked the black you'd have liked the red too.

A lot has changed round there esp since the WC worth giving a go when you get chance.
