We are staying until Friday near Burton on Trent.
Does anyone know of any local woods etc.
We have been to Cannock and are heading there again later in the week.
Any ideas would be great. We are staying to the west of Burton.

Well there is a route in the Ticknall/ Foremark resevoir area that includes Robin woods but it is nothing challenging. There is also loads of stuff around the Chase. If you haven't been to the Peak District then I would try and go there definitely a good bet if you like natural techy descents.

Hicks Lodge is about 10 miles away, easy but pleasant place for a blast

yup as frosty says there is some bits around ticknall, the routes are on this actual website. iirc two of the route are the wrong way round on the links, but you'll work it out. not very techy but great for a blast, do it once to get your bearings and then do it again much faster, that's what I did anyway.

If you have kids, Hicks Lodge is great, though no one replied to my thread on it the other day.

Quite good fun without kids as well if you just want a mindless twisty blast about.

Is Hicks Lodge open every Thursday till late or is it just a summer thing? Would be fun for a different evening ride.

Bit far maybe and roadworks on A38 at Derby may slow you up but plenty of really good riding north of Derby from The Chevin at Belper up to Ambergate, Black Rocks and Crich, similar distance in opposite direction is Hopwas Woods near Tamworth
As also mentioned plenty of exploring also around Swithland /Cademan woods etc
But your best bet immediately around Burton is the stuff around Ticknall
It's probably possible to ride to Hicks via the National Cycle Network direct from Burton

Also around Coxbench there is Horsley Caslte Woods and nearby Coxbench woods for a bit of DH action with a lot of jumps to mess around on if that's your thing.

If do a search on here you should find some XC routes around Tcknall, I'm sure there has been a thread on this subject before.

Wobbliscott, do you mean Drum hill / Brackley Gate?
These woods here-

OP - Large parts of the Ticknall ride will be horrible claggy mud after the last couple of days rain, esp if the farmers have been out harvesting as much of it is paths alongside or across fields
Robin Woods on the route main bridleway is always muddy but there are some little downwards paths cut through the trees

Never bothered to read the NW Leics thread, but sounds like you are our kind of riders. If you fancy an excursion to the mountain biking mecca that is Ilkeston, think you'd all fit right in!

Thanks guys
We have just got back from a ride from hicks lodge and the blue route was perfect for our 7 year old twins and the rest of us had a nice chilled ride.
Thanks for the Weds evening offer but its the eldest daughters birthday and she wants to ride Cannock in the dry and look at some of the course for sundays race.
Will look at some of the other routes for tomorrow or Thus.
Thanks again!!

Mctd

likewise, if you ever fancy a trip over to the Bermuda triangle of mountain biking ๐Ÿ˜€

We are mostly a good bunch, and we try to maintain a high level of banter and delusions of grandeur in terms of our collective awesomeness.
