So off to Morocco for a well earned rest 1st week of December. We're going to be staying near the beach, mainly chilling out and doing a bit of surfing, but wouldn't mind getting a day of biking
Anyone know of any bike hire places round there that are 1/2 decent, and any trails? I know Exodus do an 8 day holiday out there, but can't quite afford that, plus I think my gf would kill me...
Any advice appreciated!
Joe

I know you're not answering cos you're all jealous...
Final BUMP
Looks like I'll just have to lie on the beach then...
I have been to Agadir twice in the past couple of years, and can't remember seeing anywhere hiring bikes out. If you like running then it is a great beach for running along, just stop when you get to the man with the gun at the end.
You will probably have a bit more luck on the surfing front, a couple staying in our hotel went somewhere north of Agadir surfing everyday and seemed to enjoy it.
Can't vouch for riding, but north of Agadir has some very good surfing. The fishing village of Taghazout is a good base to explore a few breaks from and is a short [1/2 hour max] bus ride north of Agadir.
It's been a few years since I surfed there, but the main breaks are Anchor Point and Killer Point. Quite a few nice beaches along that strecth of coast, but can not remember any names.
yeah tagazout is much nicer than Agadir, from a surf perspective and also just chilling out. Not sure about biking, if someone does a trip there, why not email you, they might be able to put a 2 day thing together for you?
For surfing and accom contact Rapture surf Morocco, they run a bunkhouse type place (*well did a few years ago), and I would recommend them very highly - great people/fab food. (I also did the Exodus holiday and Rapture blew them away for food and vfm)
Yeah, going to be mainly Surfing- staying at Bibi Sidi. Going to be a fact finding mission mainly, a bit of winter sun. Might take a trip up the the Anti Atlas Mountains and see what that's like.
hi,
I'm taking my bike to Tghazout at Christmas.
I've been surfing there for several years as my brother-in-law set up Surf Maroc a while ago.
I've never taken the bike, so it will be a bit of an experiment but there are some decent hills near the surf camp so I'm going to just go and explore.
Let me know how you get on and I will do likewise.
I reckon the biking there could be full of dust singletrack!
Good luck.
I took a bike to Agadir when I went with a friend in the mid nineties. It was good for getting a little way out of town but we didn't find much in the way of off roading in that area. The few trails we did follow were more dirt roads and dead ended at small collections of houses with kids hanging round looking at you like you'd just landed from another planet.
While we were there we hired a car and drove to Marakech, spending a couple of nights away from our hotel. I'd recommend that if you can tear yourself away from the surf. When you go take any old shirts and cheap watches you can find. I had many offers from locals to swap my shirt or watch for varius souvenirs.
I have done the Cycle ACtive trip to Morocco it was one of the best holidays ever and we had a Moroccon guide called HAssan (as well as Rich from CA). Drop them an e-mail they may be able to help you out?
I did the Exodus trip (Atlas Descent) a couple of years ago.
I know that they do have bikes based in Agadir as a couple of the guys on our holiday used them, but I have no idea if they would just rent the bikes out. TBH the organisation was a bit shonky, with a UK guide who didn't really rate Exodus, although the local guides were great.
The holiday was amazing - just for the scenery. We didn't ride from Agadir, but rode back down to the coast to the North of the city, from the high Atlas mountains, at the end of the trip. The trails that we rode were all small roads / donkey tracks. The area is very agricultural and single track paths were few and far between as a very sparse covering of short wheat is grown on any available spot. Riding off road would likely wipe out the families daily grain ration in one easy swoosh.
As Mostly Balanced said the rough roads and trails inevitable lead to a group of houses with kids showing a great interest in your bike. We didn't come across any malice of any sort, but you do feel a bit of an arse when you are riding a bike which (possibly) cost more than they earn in a year 😳 If you can find a bike and are happy just exploring the back roads and villages then I would go for it, if you are looking for techy singletrack then you would need a guide... although if you are lucky you may find some lovely grippy rock slabs to play 'chicken' on 🙂
I disagree with Flowerpower, some of the singletrack we round was phenomenal and certainly wasn't ruining any families livlihood, although to be fair you do need a guide to find it. We had a British guide (Rich) and a Moroccon guide who was the one that spent many a winter/his off season scoping the area for awesome trails. Have a look at this thread for some of our Moroccon holidays pics: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/help-me-decide-where-to-mtb-holiday-next
I agree with Flowerpower about riding around the local villages. I gave a Neutrigrain bar to one bunch of kids (only thing I had, as they all love sweets or just the 5 litre water carriers we discarded regularly), there were 4 of them they eventually got through the wrapper (which they threw on the floor, I went collecting it) and broke it into pieces to share, even down to saving one of the kids a bit who had run off somewhere. It was heart breaking that I was on a £1800 bike which was money they wouldn't even be able to comprehend. Definately worth a trip just for the cultural side of things.
Great Pics MC!
Yup, I'll drop Exodus and Cycle Active a line, and see what they've got.
Main focus of the trip is Cultural tbh, with a bit of surfing and biking on the side, so not the be all and end all, and I really don't want to be taking any kit, so going to be low on gnar quotient what ever happens...
Cheers all
