[Closed] Rides to the north of Manchester

[#9973223]

I'm now based in Manchester and, until I get my ebike, I'm looking for some nice rides that aren't too demanding. Ideally I'm looking for quiet roads/gravel type riding although sedate uphill on the MTB would be fine. I have no idea where I need to be heading for quiet roads (if I'm going road I want to ride from home) or even if that's possible. Don't mind a bit of a ride on busier roads to get to them so long as it's not too far (I've been commuting down Bury New Rd this week). Rides up to 40-50km should be OK.

Any suggestions?

I did a really nice loop over the pennines from a bit further north than that that was recommended on here.ย  Orton loop from tebay services.ย  really nice day out, nothing very gnarly.ย  Hopefully it in these links

Not to the north... But the canal ride scaled posted and my Bridgewater commute would be a nice 60km with the majority being off road but not technical

You're in the perfect spot, apart from the hilly bit. 🙂

Basically, you can ride for miles without having to piss about with too many main roads.

Phillips park will take you directly to Radcliffe. From there you can pick up the canal, which will take you to a path by the side of Elton Res past the East Lancs Railway depot which drops you into Bury. From there, you have an almost traffic free, cycle pathย  route north to Ramsbottom. From there, the world's yer oyster.

There's an interesting route into Rawtenstall from the centre of Rammy along the Irwell following the sculpture trail. Take your fishing gear, it's packed full of hungry trout. 🙂

From there, it's your choice - Rossendale, Calderdale, Rooley Moor, Mary Towneley Loop, Hebden or over to Burnley, which gives you access to the Trough of Bowland, Pendleย  and the Yorkshire Dales.

Have a nose and an explore around Burrs Country Park in Bury. With a bit of exploration you can do a clockwise almost traffic free route back to Prestwich.

Have you met the Monday night lot? They'll fill you in on details and know the place really well.

Drop us a line if you get stuck.

Not too well so a bit slow atm but happy to show you round. If your average speed is in double figures, as above, the Monday night crew are your friends. A genuinely nice, friendly bunch with a ridiculous amount of local knowledge. No one gets left behind.

The Blue Bay and Forts of India do a nice curry btw and Katsouris deli on Bury Market is a must do.

If you like live music, keep Augustย  bank holiday free. Bury has a superb, family friendly music festival - just search for Glaston - Bury and take some ear plugs.

🙂

Thanks all, Rusty Spanner there are lots of ideas there to keep me going. Not met the Monday night lot yet but it's on my list.

Without my ebike I'm always relatively slow (bit of a hard term to give any meaning to), if I push too hard then I lose power in my legs and then I'm really slow! Hence looking for some pootle loops to ride me over for now.

Thanks for the offer. Today's ride was ~40km with very little elevation and what it told me was that I want my ebike. Riding a normal bike now just hurts (and not in that good exertion way) and leaves me walking like I've been drinking heavily. I'm hoping to grab it this coming week at some point so I may be in touch after that if you don't mind riding with an ebike (I use it on a mode that's sociable and just takes the edge off!)?

I'd also like to take this opportunity to say **** MS.

I don't think anyone would care what kind of bike you turn up on. It's just nice to meet decent people.

Come to Hit The North and say hello.

I'll be the fat hairy bloke on the old bike. Binners will be the fat bald bloke chatting to me at the back. We'll probably be in The Church for a pint after, be lovely to see you.

Don't bring an ebike to a Monday night ride, every other bugger will want one ๐Ÿ˜€

There's loads of us round Manchester, just shout if you need anything

Rusty - just in case you've somehow missed it, HtN has been postponed. I think Jason has rescheduled to a date in December but I can't find the post about it.

Chvck. Definitely try to get along to the MNPR's. Prestwich is where it all began and still features regularly along with various locations around Bolton, Ramsbottom, Littleborough and further afield. Harry the Spider tends to post the location for the following week on here each Thursday.

I fetched my ebike today so I fully intend on doing so :). Looking forward to learning the area. Need to dust off my lights though!

OK so I've now met the MNPR crew and fully intend on riding with them frequently. I also happen to have 2 days of daylight a week that I can ride in so I'm curious about route advice for weekend rides. So far most of the routes that I've grabbed off of Strava have turned out to be heavy on footpaths (I think that I got lucky when I went out last Saturday as the wedding was on too) which doesn't seem ideal for a bank holiday/sunny weekend.

I did a loop north of Heywood which was nice in a being out there way but it was pretty low in techy or singletracky descents (although did have a pretty wild chute). So, any route suggestions or places to look at on the map for a (hopefully sunny) bank holiday weekend?
