I think the bearings in my Fuel EX8 are due for replacing. There is a bit of free movement without the shock being activated (and its only a bit), but you can feel it.

Where's the best place for bearings and how hard is it to change them? Do i just take a punt on one of the kits on ebay? I'll also be having the shock serviced at the same time.

Put a post up asking "Fuel EX8 - what replacement bearings?" and you might get a better response from people browsing the forums...

Got my LBS to do the bearings on my FSR because they were a bastard to get out. Money well spent.

Chris, I'm getting the bike tree down at Dore to do mine. they said they'd replace them one set at a time in case I didn't need a full set. they also do shock servicing

Cheers Podge, i'll give them a call and see what they say. Have looked up other threads and found that the bearings have lifetime replacement for original owner so will give them a bell too.

If there is play when you lift the saddle, it may only be shock bushes and not linkage bearings? which are easy to do yourself

Yeah I would check the shock bushes, put you finger next to the set you want to check and lift the bike up with the saddle, then see if you can feel any movement.

My mates session 88 and fuel ex 8 both from 2009 needed the bearings changed about 3 weeks ago, as for the bearing kits on ebay the ones at £44.99 airborne10101 are mine and are very good kits.

Changing the bearings yourself isn't too difficult, your also in luck that I just bought a 2009 fuel ex for myself and it's too big, that said it is still here and I just serviced it, I could supply you with tools and talk you through doing the job.

If you need a hand my email is in my profile 😀
