hi guys need to change the middle ring on the xt m770 chainset, what torq key is it for the bolts? i assume i undo all four of these and the rings fall off? is it a pretty simple job?

do i need any other special tools at all?

thanks!

you'll need a to remove the crankset (no doubt it maybe possible to not have to, but with HT II it's so easy, don't not do it) so an allen key for that and you'll need to remove the crank retaining bolt (plastic thing in the end of your crankset) but a 5p piece can be used to do that & maybe a mallet to tap the crankset off with.
Otherwise as you say a torc key probably a T-25 (mine are allen but whatever), and a chainring bolt tool (or a flat head screwdriver), though sometimes you can get away without one of these.

so is it defo a t25 screw?

No idea defintiely, mine was/is an allen key IIRC (or is on my other bike), but the T-25 fitting is the normal torc bolt fitting used elsewhere on bike, so I'd guess this is the one.
Yep the chainring bolt tool is for the inside of the rings, though as I say sometime you don't need one at all and other time a flat bladed screw driver can be made to make do. Though your more likely to damage them this way, and so either end up buying new bolts or re-fitting them and having a complete B%^&$$£D of a time next time you come to do this job (not that I've ever done this, ohhhh noo...). 😉

EDIT: Bugger having a check around, and the net seems to suggest it maybe a T30 fitting.... hang on I'll have a look at my bike..

I apologies, it's definitely a T30.

Have a search round for the crankset bolt tool, off-hand there the choice of two types park/shimano or icetoolz one. I have the park one and it's awkward to use and not great, I'd buy the icetoolz one if I was buying again

Slight hijack - anyone know if XTR M970 & XT M779 middle rings are interchangeable?
