I think I had originally committed to just running the groupset into the ground, I've always thought constantly replacing chains to be a bit wasteful.
Buuuuut... I realised after 3 years I've still only put 4000km on the chain (benefits/disadvantages of 2 winter bikes and lots of summer injuries 🙁 ) and have not even hit 1% wear, so for the sake of one chain I could get at least another year or two out of an Ultegra Cassette and my posh oval rings, so it seems to make sense.
Would a new chain feel smoother/shift better/run quieter?
Also, what are the go-to Shimano gear cables these days? I can't tell which of their trademark 'systems' is the polymer coating that everyone says clogs up the inners...
