I need some good quality drill bits for getting out a seized bolt. I'm just snapping and blunting the cheap ones I bought off ebay.
So what should I look for. Need 1-3mm.
Cheers.
just get lots of cheap ones and try & keep the drill still ๐
if you need to get the head off the bolt to free it, try using an angle grinder if it's a proud bolt head.
what's it stuck in? What kind of bolt?
ukdrills.com are good
Dormer drills are good quality in fact anything that ain`t cheap chinese carp tends to last the pace.
Plus the drills are only a good as the driller.
If the bolt is stainless you might struggle. Bosch do some good HSS drills with a gold coloured coating ( Titanium Nitride?)
Use drill bits with a left hand thread, running the drill backwards obviously. Or you could try a screw extractor depending on the size:-

1-2mm drill bit are very fragile no matter what the make
Try some cobalt drill bits and use some quality cutting compound. What rpm are you running the drill at? Might be an idea to have the drill running slowly.
Its an annoying button-head bolt that seems to be as soft as cheese with an allen key, but hard as nails with a dril bit. The bits I've been using are gold coloured and claim to be ti coated, but I have my doubts. Will invest in a decent set
Had the drill at 2400rpm, so will try 900rpm instead.
And yes, got screw extractors which worked on the first bolt I managed to actually drill a hole in.
The rule of thumb is, the smaller the bit, the faster the speed but you may need some lubrication to keep the temperature of the drill down. Engine oil or 3 in 1 is better than water if you haven't got the proper stuff.
Solid carbide drill is what you want, but not cheap. (1000x*S/3.141*d) to get rpm.
Real world, a Titex UFL is a good drill. Drop me an email, might have couple spare if still no good.
Nice steady drill & even pressure, press too hard & the mat' will harden & drill burn out.
