Need a rack for my car. No tow bar fitted. Are the strap on ones any good? Don't want to see my car tumbling down the motorway after me. I see Halfords have a sale on, but they all look the same to me.

No. I have seen a bike that has tumbled down the motorway. Write off. Not mine thankfully.

Roof bars or fit a tow bar. There's no point in skimping IMO. When I was buying the salesman said he get's people coming in and buying a crappy £50 rack for their flash cars and bikes worth over 2 grand. Makes no sense to me either!

I think the Saris Bones are suposed to be OK if you must get a strap-on...

E: you don't get any crash protection with a strap on rack or a 'hang on' tow bar rack. If the bike sits in a frame on the tow bar it will offer your bikes some protection in case of a low speed impact from behind.

Yes. I suspected that the tow bars ones are better. I may be changing the car soon so didn't want to go to the expense of a tow bar. But defo don't want to lose my bike of the back. Hmmm

I got a roof rack one rather than a tow bar one, but the first thing i did was drive straight into a height restriction barrier. ironically i did it on the way OUT of the car park rather than on the way in (i remembered to take the bike off on the way in) For this reason i'd reccomend the tow bar ones, those height restrictors are everywhere.

You could buy my Saris Bones RS. Zero chance of bikes falling off that but ive got a Blingo now so I don't really need it.

Don't forget that even with a strap on one you need a lightboard to go with it. Lots of folks don't bother but the police around my way pull people for it sometimes and if you have an accident without one where someone drives in to the back of you liability becomes much less clear and may go against you. Most towbar folk will fit a socket on a fly lead in the boot if you don't a full towbar fitting.

Hi, I'm in Lancaster - probably looking for about £120. It's great, the only bike rack I've used where I wasn't worried about bikes falling off on the motorway.

It can be a bit fiddly getting full suss bikes on, though you can get these false top tube thingies, but I've never bothered.
