The Mentalist is addictive to watch, start at the beginning (obviously) so it all makes sense.

Also, if you like factual stuff, Whale Wars is a belter!

Dexter? I really rated the first few series.

If you want something lighter, I can't recommend Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm enough. Both hilarious and really clever.

Oh yeah, Weeds is pretty good. Very similar to Breaking Bad, though it predates it, just a bit lighter.

Love/hate - the Irish version of the wire and has one actor from the wire in it.

Justified - Good for walton goggins fans after the shield

Sons of Anarchy is ok but a bit cheesy, Hells angels with relationship problems on rather sad bikes with ridiculously accented PIRA characters. I was reading a while ago that the lead, Jax, is a geordie and started off in Byker Grove

Really enjoying 'The Americans' too.
'House of Cards' if you've got access to Netflix, Kevin Spacey is great in it (I found myself liking his character even though he is a despicable shit)

Ooooh, the original UK house of cards is always a series I wanted to watch, but never got round to. Now I don't know whether to go with the UK or US version???

"Orange is the new black" on Netflix. Just finished watching all 13 episodes and it's brilliant! Can't wait for the next series now. 😀

Luther is awesome.
Suits
Thick of It
Louie (though it can get a bit depressing later on in the series)
Banshee so long as you accept its completely ridiculous
Community

I've also been loving Video Game High School, should be all free to watch on youtube.

Not enough votes for Justified. Fantastic underplayed characters and some truly wonderful dark humour that makes anything else look like it is trying too hard.

I'll second Hannibal as best new series of the year. The Americans was good too.

Justified and Mad Men are the best running shows out there just now (after Breaking Bad). Spartacus is definitely worth a look too, if you get through the first 3 or 4 episodes before they realised they could make an interesting show.

I'd generally agree with all the other recommendations too, apart from SOA, which is well made but not a patch on most of the other shows mentioned here.

Luther is great but when your used to a losing yourself for a month in a box set if the wire British dramas are frustratingly short, almost claustrophobic.

Not that it's in the same vein as much of the above but an exception to the rule is Ideal. They quietly put out 57 episodes, over 100 characters, superb cameos such as Mark E Smith as god.

'Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy'.... Then 'Smileys People' straight after, British drama at its best.

I was into the Sopranos, got box set 1 on DVD and watched it in a weekend, repeat with series 2 the following week, at the time series 3 was on TV so was a few episodes behind. Also storylines that would sometimes go way back, then someone is killed off in relation to that.

Otherwise Downton Abbey?

AS ever I will recommend Oz. It's a little patchy and went right off the rails at a couple of points especially in later series, but when it's good, it's incredibly good.

And STW favourite Band of Brothers.

And, it's a bit of an investment of time but the West Wing. it's almost never bad, and even the slower or less interesting episodes are always setting up the ridiculously good highlights. Love it.

Another +1 for Justified. I love a show where the 'good' characters are far from perfect, and the 'bad' guys are easy to sympathise with, even root for...

And a fantastic little theme tune to boot. Can't even bring myself to fast forward through it, even after all those episodes. Only The Wire had a comparably catchy hook...

I quite enjoyed Banshee...it was a bit silly but enjoyable.

Also

Dexter
Ray (just started and has been pretty good so far)
Sons of Anarchy (again)
Newsroom
Falling Skies (took a while to get into but it has bought out the inner geek in me)
Spartacus is ace...silly, gory and lots if nudity. Thoroughly good fun though.
Braqo is really good too. I really got into this.
The series about the Aussie mob was great but I can't remember the name if it now. It was on FX a year or two ago.

Sky Atlantic seem to have quite a lot of good shows these days as does Fox.

Another vote for Californication. Brilliant addictive stuff.

Snappy script, funny, fast paced and you will REALLY want to be Hank Moody.

Top of the Lake

...its on BBC at the moment, so you can catch it on Iplayer. There is only six episodes, so its not a series as such, but its well worth a watch IMO.

Just finished watching Hanninbal on Sky, was pretty good, if not a bit dark and pretty disturbing in parts. Mads Mikkelsen is an awesome Dr lecter IMO, I never really found Antony Hopkins scary, but Mads nails it.

Out on September 2nd
