Hi,
I've just taken apart a set of coil U turn pikes to service them and was just after a bit of clarification/advice.
I've suspected they've not been giving full travel for some time (only about an inch or so short though) and when pulling the lowers there was noticeably more oil in the damper leg. I take it this means I need to do the seals on the MoCo unit?
I've also just recently noticed that the floodgate adjuster (external) is seized, it turns but moves the compression adjustment with it. I don't have a small enough allen key to take the knob off so haven't given it a proper check but is this a common issue? Likely to just need freed off and greased?
Thanks
Calum
the damper leg, is the oil in the top or bottom of the fork? from memory lower has about 15ml of oil (injected via the lower bolt hole) and the damper has about 120ml of oil.
you will not get 100% sanction travel, this is normal.
this should help
Cheers for the link, found a few guides online but that looks pretty well laid out. Will be getting printed out for the rebuild.
Sorry, rereading that I realise it isn't very clear, there was more oil in the lower leg on the damper side than on the spring side.
This happened to mine. It's because the oil from the damper is leaking into the lowers causing hydraulic lock so you can't get full travel. Needs a damper service or possibly a new MOCO cartridge.
Good luck!
If it is fluid from the damper then it wont be leaking from the moco damper (which just screws into the top of the CSU). It would have to be coming through the rebound asembly where the shaft comes through to the lower leg or where it clips into the CSU surely.
Are you sure its not just a case of the spring side being overly dry and the damper side having the correct amount of oil?
Duh, sorry - as gt900uk says - it's from the rebound assembly!
Thanks for the replies. I tend to think of the damper as a single unit but yes, it would have to be the rebound damper leaking. Could easily be a case of the spring side not having enough oil, I have never noticed any external leaks but also have no idea of the service history.
I've ordered up a kit, figure I am as well doing the lot while it is apart.
Anyone able to shed light on the floodgate adjuster? I am hoping it is just in need of a clean out, really frustrating not having the right allen key for it.
I think the floodgate adjuster will probably be fine with a strip and clean.
Pikes are great and so easy to service (along with most RS forks).
Yep, easy to service as long as the 10mm nut on the bottom of the fork leg doesnt sieze, requiring the use of an air wrench to remove it.... But this has only happened on 66% of Pikes / Revelations I've owned!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the oil in the lower is just there as a lube, using more than the recommended amount wont affect travel and is actually quite a good idea as the stuff tends to leak. Not so with the uppers, where you need the correct volume or you will have travel issue.
