[Closed] Rear mech wrapped around swing-arm - how?

[#424574]

I have had a few probs with my rear mech, but have taken apart, regreased the pivots, and it all seems fine.

On my last ride though, somehow the mech hanger was ripped off and mech was wrapped around top of swing-arm - ie it went backwards and around cassette.

I was going downhill, not pedalling, may have picked up a stick but it wasn't there when I stopped

Could it be a fault with the mech that caused this? My thinking is that this is unlikely as it jammed backwards. If it had jammed into the underside of the swing-arm, I would think the mech could have caused it

any ideas

cheers

Sounds like it got caught in the spokes and ripped round. Any broken spokes?

2nd XC_PK, you must have not re set the stop screw after playing about, can you remember if you was in the biggest ring at the back?

OR, the problems you had were due to the mech hanger being damaged, ie bent toward the wheel, the mech cought the spoke and that broke the weakened mech hanger...

nope - no broken spokes (or bent even)

tinsy by stop screw, you mean the 2 little screws that limit the travel of the mech? If so I had reset - but when I stopped chain was jammed between cassette and spokes

I did mean those screws, it sounds like it was option two, the mech hangar was suspect and gave up...

Its all a bit hypothetical now, only help I can ofer was a I spotted an SLX shaddow mech on ebay from merlin yesterday brand new with cosmetic damage looked cheap.

are you sure you weren't pedalling?

A pedalling motion means the chain is moving towards the back of the bike as it passes through the rear mech and if it then stuck it can easily rip the mech clean off (backwards as you describe).

Similar thing happened to me. A chain pin pulled out which meant the chain widened out into a V type shape facing backwards on the chain. This was too wide to fit through the mech arms and wrapped it round the back of the chain stay.
