The lever on my rear xt mech snapped off so now I have to engage the clutch using a pair of pliers on the remains of the lever.

Now though the clutch keeps turning itself off going down rough trails.

Anything I can do or is it new mech time. ?

I'm not sure how old it is to be honest as the bike was second hand.

Sounds like new mech time, I'm guessing the lever helps to stop the clutch disengaging. Having had one before I can see how that would be the case, it seems to provide the necessary resistance. Keep the old one as a spare?

Take the cover off the clutch housing and tighten the little nut a little and try that.

As it was on a 2nd hand bike you have no warranty so either use it the way it is, tighten the nut as per post above or replace the full mech.

XT mechs have become disposable to me, I've gone through about 4 in a year so far, and they wont warranty them, the standard response is "Are there any scuff marks on the mech?", "yes? well, probably crash damage then". Even if it's the clutch mechanism that's broken through bad design.
