Thanks - hadn't come across that. Looks like they're solving slightly different problems? The Fair Drop Best shifts the saddle fore-aft, whereas the SwitchGrade tilts the saddle (which should also move my weight fore-aft). I was thinking a steeper effective seat angle for the climbs, would stop the front wheel wandering. Might well be that either would solve my problem. Have you compared them?

"funky" is more complimentary than some comments I've had - thanks! I'm calling them CombOvers - like a comb, over your wheel! It's my own idea - and (with a shorty) it works better than anything else I've tried, so I thought I'd put them into production, and I might be a bit biased ;-).
Real world: face and glasses stay clean, legs and belly get as filthy as ever. It doesn't try to keep the rest of you clean, just your eyes and mouth.
The idea: modern down tubes are wider, so they're already shielding a fair bit of what comes off the wheel. The CombOvers just cover the gaps either side of it. The slats look like they'd let everything through, but mud comes off the tyre on a tangent, so from the mud's point of view they overlap - always hits a slat, never a gap.
