anyone know if there is anything for the reading - oxford area?
saw the short film about the one in bristol, providing bikes for asylum seekers and want to donate some old bikes to one around here.

went to the dump today and saw lots of bikes being chucked. so sad.

Berkshire council chuck them as they sub contract the work out although Newbury has a charity section which recycle them to be used by those in need, Hampshire (& no doubt other county's) resell them onsite (normally £5-6)

No such thing as Berkshire council, Berkshire went unitary sometime ago.. split into a number of unitary authorities (West Berks, Bracknell Forest, Reading Council, Windsor and Maindenhaed, Slough and Wokingham Councils) though for waste some partner back up - councils hey admin overload

but yes they dump them - lots of councils/operators would rather just get the scrap price rather than the hassle of sending them for refurb inc all issues with liability.. also lots of the organisations that are involved with cycle recycling are suffering due to public sector cuts as many depend on grants with their current business models

When we have old bikes I just leave them outside unlocked sometimes with a "I need a new home" sign and they are gone within an hour or two.
Informal recycling.
