So going camping with family and friends for a few days in Ravenglass in Cumbria . Will probably get a spare couple of hours each day to toddle off for a ride.
So locals what would you take a road bike or mtb . ?

I'd say road, especially if riding from the campsite. Enjoy hardknott! There is some mtb locally, but the road riding is easier to plan and get to if on your own.

Yup that was my thought Hardknott and Wrynose are close. Cant believe the elevation gain on hardknott for such a short segment. 😯
