Hour blast on the road bike tonight, and found a nice adjustable spanner at the side of the road. Its obviously been there a while as was well covered in gutter crap. Cleaned up a treat and works great.
What useful stuff have you found trail/road side?
Love this thread. I found a snap on socket spanner, an old rusty adjustable spanner that i take out with me when I'm on the fixie and a blackburn pump by the road over the years. Thought i found a set of white oakley radars but thwy turned out to be just cheap no name jobbies. On the trailside I seem to find a huge amount of anodized red rock shox rebound adjusters.
I dropped a bottle on one of the first jumps on lower cliff over chase and when i went back to collect it i notices there were loads of computers and bottles that had fallen to the same fate.
I accidentally left the oil cap off my motorbike, 45 mins into the a ride and I felt a wet leg where the oil was spraying up out of the filler hole. I thought what I need is one of these:

When I was about 12, I found a Bowie knife in its sheath. Took it to the police, 6 months later got a call to collect it as it was unclaimed. although my dad had to go with me cos I was a minor, they still happily handed it over....
I was in the French Alps this summer. Popped over a pass into a remote valley and saw on the trail one of those old school aluminium can ring pulls. How long must that have been there for!!?

I saw a vibrator in the gutter on my commute once, I wouldn't say found, I decided against keeping it. It was at a set of quite busy traffic lights, puzzling.

I found a blue Park tools allen key set, it's now permanently in my saddle bag & comes on every ride.
I found a fire extinguisher in the middle of Stanmer woods once at about 9:30pm on a night ride in November.
It was a CO2 one and the pin was out.
I just *had* to give the handle a go.
5 seconds later there's been a roar like a jet engine and I'm stood in the middle of a huge cloud of CO2 with my helmet and bike lights reflecting back at me.
Anyone watching from a distance must have thought aliens had landed.
What did I do?
Looked around guiltily in case anyone had seen me and pegged it, obviously - I'm still a 12 year old schoolboy at heart.

As a kid I remember finding an entire clutch mechanism with the pedal still attached. I somehow managed to attach it to the rack on my Raleigh Arena and get it home.

Not quite in line with title but this summer, playing in a stream in France with my son, we noticed a 10 Euro note floating down the stream so we grabbed it. a couple of minutes later another two 10 Euro notes also appeared so we got those too. No sign of any one further up stream.
There was a trail in Thetford (in the days before it became popular)when I would frequently find erm....ladies undergarments and hosiery. It was generally on Sunday mornings so I guess the 'action' was taking place on Saturday evening.
Other than that....a tenner just blowing about on a cycle trail. There was no one else in sight, I hadn't passed anyone coming the other way so I claimed it.
Gloves....hundreds of them. Probably off lorries.One roadie I used to ride with would religiously gather them all up and take them home. I have no idea what he did with so many gloves but he was one of those roadies who was 'careful' with him money!
Early Sunday road ride I was dropping down duffield bank and just missed running over a lacy black thong in the middle of the road. Should have gone back up the hill to collect it, could have been a great bug net for my cycling helmet

I am always more surprised by the random lumps of large metal bits ( car/lorry)at the roadside ,then no broken down vehicle anywhere. 🙂

Found a 2ft glitter ball on the South Downs a few years back. It was in the middle of a field quite a way from any car parks etc so someone must have carried it there. God only knows what they were hoping to do with it?!?!
Once saw an alien in Stanmer woods around 9.30 on a night ride. Well I think it was an alien! There was a massive roar as it appeared but it looked more like a tall thin human like being shrouded in a cloud with a bright light emmiting from it. The light moved away from the cloud fairly quickly before i could get a good look at it and the cloud dissapeared after a few minutes................
I think I've got a few RS rebound adjusters.

I rode past a whole leaf spring assembly. Not just one leaf, but the whole thing. Must have been off a large vehicle too, as it was quite sizeable. Does make you wonder how these things just fall off, unless it fell off a scrap van's load or something.

The ones that freak me out are the suitcases full of clothes- generally open with the contents spilled a little. Seen that three four times at various points around the country. I can't help but worry about the owner! I'm guessing there's most likely a sad story attached to that 🙁

Not whilst I was out on the Bike but walking the Dog across the local Golf Links the Path goes across one of them small foot crossings of the Railway then through some Trees and back to the Road to the Golf Clubhouse.
A Kids Space Hopper, like one of them from the 70's with the aggressive teeth. Took me ages to get it out the way as the Dog was going Bonkers and attacking it.

They are still making cans with old school ring pulls in the UAE. All the cans out here (Afghanistan) come from Dubai and most have old style ring pulls including Coke and Pepsi.
£20, topeak multi tool. On Boxing Day a couple of years ago a bag with a full set of quality junior cricket gear. 3 county bats, pads, clothes and boots. Went back in the car and picked them up and donated them to the village under 11s.
On a canal path just out of town about 5pm on a summers day; a naked young couple, he was lying along the path and she was astride going hell for leather facing me as I rode up!! They didn't seem bothered at all. I had to ride round them!

Also: a mint condition trenching tool which I still use, various multitools, tyre levers, LEDs, and snapped off mudguards and discarded inner tubes. The last one always gets me: you have to take a tube out of your bag to replace it with, so why leave the old one by the side of the trail, especially when you can patch and reuse it in about five minutes once you're back home? Aside from general littering, it seems like the actions of a complete prick.
Found an iPhone 4s last year while on a road ride, wasn't blocked so phoned the ICE number and got it back to the owner. The muppet had left it on top of his car when heading off on a journey...

I've done that before, with both a phone and a Garmin 310XT. The phone was no geat loss, thankfully I heard the GPS fall off about 4 miles down the road and grabbed it. That would have been a good score for a passing cyclist/runner!

I found a bike abandoned in the middle of the road recently: An old but capable Ultegra-specced racer, complete with energy juice bottles. It looked like an aborted theft or abduction.
A little local detective work revealed that it had been insufficiently secured to the roof mount after a ride! 🙄

Not on a road but found a drone, military plane thing, on way out to St. Kilda about 7 years ago. Fished it out the sea and took it to the army base on Kilda. They said thanks. I thought it was at least worth a couple of pints myself to say thank you.

@tang, it wasn't a topeak alien at Sherwood Pines was it. If so it was mine, luckily I found my wallet that had fallen out as well when I forgot to zip up my backpack pocket. Several people must have passed it, it was about a foot from the centre of the singletrack. Sinking feeling followed by huge relief I tell ye! To be fair I hadn't realised I'd lost my multitool at the time.
Briko glasses, a few random tools and a set of decent binoculars in a case and in mint condition!
Off the bike I've found an empty purse, £20 note and a fair few pound coins. Weirdest thing was finding a 1960's purse when renovating a hotel. Was stuffed behind a cistern in the toilet block of the ballroom, we reckon someone had nicked it and emptied the cash out before stashing what was left!
I found some nearly new Nike hightops on the road.
