Just received my carbon Wisers (new) and the top end of the Kevlar has black (almost like boot polish) discolouring along the top- it looks like carbon dust settled ontop of the Kevlar but under the lacquer.

Then on the top of the riser bar- strained looking Kevlar weave/dodgy on one side.

Is this normal?

Surely when the warehouse person picked them up (they come in a clear wrapper not a box) they'd have seen this?

More importantly, how's the compression damping on them?

Clearly, as well as never having run a business, you've never worked for minimum wage in a warehouse either.

Are you talking about the sick-coloured bars? I had a set of those and the kevlar wrap did have some greyish discolouration where it overlapped. Nothing to worry about (unless you're a tart).

Brant was order picking, and he saw they were for you, and thought that a 'over the cockpit by snapping carbon fatality' would be the answer to one of his dreams.

Not a great pic as the camera flash 'reacted' with the lacquer thus lightening the 'bruise'. BTW you can't 'rub' the darkness off in anyway- its under the lacquer so I'm guessing its either carbon powder or the carbon underneath the Kevlar wasn't set right and bled? through the Kevlar open weave?

it's covered in black cracks - send it to me before you injure yourself riding it!

the shadows are just the carbon bar showing through the Kevlar wrap, it'll be fine...

Actually I'd agree that looks crap, looks like residual ink form the logo printing.

From an aesthetic point of view I'd send them back especially as they are £65.

wwaswas if thats the case the bars should have been rejected and sent back to the factory or sold as visual seconds.

Kingtut - its like the same stuff you get when you spill a toner cartridge so I'm inclined to say carbon powder/residual from manufacturing process. i.e. the guy on the shopfloor didnt wipe down the bars before applying lacquer.

Some wierd ultra baggy cargo pants that my missus was developing at work.

Its not just the discolouring - its the strained/wierd effect at the top of the riser bend (matting of the gloss lacquer) as well. **** all chance you'd catch me trusting some QC issue carbon bars regardless if it was just cosmetic.

Wasn't there other issues with Ragleys? (frame finishing etc etc)?

Out of interest - and you can take your time and think about the answer - out of all the literally thousands of bike parts that have passed though your grubby, fetid little palms, are there any at all... ANY... that you've took delivery of and thought... "Yip! They're great! Just what I was after"?

They are normally unpacked, checked for all the bits and fitted asap.

However I've bought secondhand things, gotten them and thought WHHOAA wtf.

This isn't what I expected to say, ever when I opened a new purchase.

Agree. I've asked for them to be collected. I'm not going down to the Post office for something that is blatantly wrong (they came clear-packed not boxed). So it wouldn't be reasonable to send something out in that condition then expect a customer to go further out of their way would it?

cracking at the start of the rise...

On these (new) ones it looks like its pre-crazed already (already been bloody used) at the top of the rise.

Thing is, if yours are like that - why take the risk? You wash out on a bike- fine but your bar suddenly snaps in half on a descent you have a high chance of your face/arm suddenly dropping down over that area towards the forks at speed haven't you?!

Could I be the first to mention a revolutionary new material. Its called aluminium. You may want to consider it. If you look hard on CRC you may be able to find some cutting edge bars made of this strong, light and versatile material.

Just a thought

I thought the entire point of that version of the bars is that they look horrible?

TBH I don't think you should be buying carbon bars- reason being, you asked me about my Monkeylite DHs "have they ever been crashed". Well, if you look at a bar like that and think "Oh it's carbon, what if it's been crashed on, it might snap" then you will never be happy with the material. Almost every other carbon bar ever made is weaker, and sooner or later you'll be in a crash, will you stop trusting those too?

Quality carbon bars are strong and reliable, and you don't need to be precious about them or paranoid. But if you are, then it's not the material for you.

Its not just the dark stuff- there's wierd crazing in the kevlar as though they've actually been dragged against something before the lacquer coat. Then there are the square single sheets of carbon underneath (not like the wrap pattern you normally see on cheapo c456's- this is a single dark sheet over lighter material.

Shoddy.

they look exactly the same as the pic on the hotlines website.. I was dithering between a raw carbon/kevlar Carnegie and an ally one last year.. my pocket dictated that I went for the ally version the end..

after reading this thread I wish I'd shelled out the extra few quid for the carbon badboys.. they look flippin' swish..
