Will I die if one of the wee springs is missing?
Edit. As in, is it more likely to fail? (not 'will it increase my chance of randomly dropping dead')

no, having them in would probably very very slightly encourage it to loosen

No it wouldn't it's like a spring washer, placing the nut under tension against the threads thus making it hard for it to undo.
