Will the below (in pic) rear shifter be ok even on the latest 9spd clutch (etc) Sram rear mechs?

There's no 9 speed clutch mechs, only 10 and 11 speed.

You'll be able to get that to work with a 10 speed Shimano rear mech though- basically when Shimano made their 10 speed, they copied SRAM 9-speed ๐Ÿ˜† The cable ratio is a wee bit different, so they can deny the copying but it's close enough that all you have to do is add a wee 6mm spacer on the mech, between the cable and the mech.

Some great info there, thanks! More thinking to do then...BUT...if I keep it simple for the moment, Im guessing your average (new) X9 ( speed rear mech will be fine with this old style gripshift?

Aye, all SRAM 9 speed apart from some of the very bottom end stuff like, er, maybe Force or X4? Can't remember... But anyway, absolutely everything SRAM 9 speed, from day 1 to now, from X5 up, is compatible.
