Hi all,
I've got one of the above, and am getting thoroughly confused by bottom brackets, so I'm hoping someone with the same bike (and ideally the original spec BB) can help me out?
The original BB died very rapidly, as you'd expect from a PF30. I got that replaced, and that died too. Then I got it replaced with a Wheels Manufacturing one, thinking this would solve the issue, but that started creaking and groaning pretty rapidly as well!
So then I bought a Hope PF46 replacement.
I fitted it, following the instructions and using the Hope tool, and all seemed well. Then I put the cranks back in, cranked them up to the recommended torque settings.... and the pedals wouldn't turn! ๐ฏ
I loosened the cranks off, and things then worked, the chainring alignment was right for shifting and so on, but the rotation wasn't smooth, so I took the cranks off again, and I've managed to bugger up one of the bearings in fitting it. ๐ฟ
This is where the confusion starts! The chap at Hope was as helpful as he could be on the phone (although not easy, of course, not being able to see and poke it), and we're 99% certain that I've got the right BB, but going back and looking at the Wheels Manufacturing BB, that had a roughly 15mm spacer on the drive side, with the bearings sitting inboard, whereas with the Hope setup, they're sitting outboard, and not using the spacer.
Please could someone with this bike take a look for me and let me know whether you've got the bearings sitting internally or externally?
I'd love to help as i have a 2015 stumpy Evo too.
But, i have always used a Praxxis converter and it's worked well. Very little creaking, and when i does (about twice a year) i just take it out, grease it and it solves the creak.
However, i'm almost certain that the PF jobbie that come out of the bike looked axactly like this.
Just a small flange that butts up to the BB shell.
Can you put a photo up so we can check it's been installed correctly? We might be able to spot something.
I'm running a hope BB with xtr cranks on my 2016 stumpy 29er with no problems
Are you using the stock cranks that came with it? Have you put the spacer back on the cranks?
We have the hope PF46 fitted to three Stumpjumpers and an Enduro all fitted with SRAM XO BB30 cranks. There are two types of Hope ones and the Specialized ones take the short ones. The part numbers are the same apart from one has an S on the end which is the one you need.
If you fit the bottom bracket as per their instructions then there should be no spacers between the bearing and the bottom bracket shell. You shoud have two bearing cover washers about 1mm in thickness in the kit to protect the bearings and the bearings should be fitted with the green on the outside. The Sram cranks that we have come with a spacer, think its 13mm to fit between the outer bottom bracket on the drive side and the inside of the chain ring to give the correct chain line. We have also had to run 0 deg offset chain rings to ensure that it dosent catch on the Specialized chain guide.

Correct one
Not this one
Hope do two versions of some bb's, a standard and a short, you need the shorter one on the stumpys as this sticks the bearings in the shell rather than hanging out of it and stops the cranks binding, If you check the code on the one you have I'll bet it ends ssn I suspect you may need the one ending ssns. Hope has a really useful guide for compatibility just pop onto the hope tech site, select pf46 and click on the manuals and diagrams link.
Bugger! I've definitely got the wrong one then. ๐
Thanks for the help.
Looks like I'll just have to order the right one, plus extra bearings, then bung this one on eBay...
Easy mistake, ring Hope, they might be able to help you out with swapping it.
Thanks Tracey. I'm sure they or CRC would've done if I'd not already fitted it and knackered the bearings! Oh well... You live and learn!
