The 105's are 2013 vintage I believe, 10 speed.

Looking at going 1x10 possibly in the future with a Sunrace 11x 42...

Assuming I'm right that 9 speed XT mech uses same cable pull as 10 speed 105... Would I want a medium or long cage?

(Oh to check, 10 speed xt totally different cable pull to 105, right?? )

Thanks mate.

Am I right in thinking the same applies to a 9 spd Deore mech too (to cut costs alittle)

Thanks again.

Yeah. All 9-speed MTB mechs have the same cable pull. I've used XT and XTR with Ultegra shifters for years. I had 105/Deore on an earlier bike.

Thanks for confirming that for me.

Do you think I would get away with a medium cage for the 11-42 cassette?

42T is beyond the original design spec of any 9 speed Shimano mech. The quoted figures are usually conservative but I think that might be just too much. You may need something like a Goatlink

I'd say no or at least it won't be very satisfactory. The shifter / mech combo is fine though, that's what I'm using.

I use a 40t happily enough on a 9sp XT & 5700 shifter.
