Hoping to get out on the Quantocks on the 2nd of Jan. i've dona all the usual routes from Great Wood, Lydeard Hill, Holford etc but was wondering if anyone had some routes from the Triscombe carpark (not the triscombe stone but the carpark south of it).

I'm looking for fun desents as the old steed hasn't been out for a while and i want to go easy on the old pins. i was going to see the UK bike park DH race there but unfortunately it was cancelled due to the snow so i'm hoping to find the track.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you mean the car park at the Blue Ball pub, on the eroded lane that leads up past the quarry to Triscombe Stone. This is a variant of what I plan to ride tomorrow. You'll need an OS to follow this:

Well start by cimbing up that lane to triscombe stone. Then go over the cattle grid and pickup the trail that parallels the road down. At the end join the road, after 40m turn sharp left uphill on a gravel farm track. Look for the bridleway sign on the right - ignore it - then shortly after a thin trail sneaking down into trees - Jambo and Sharki. Keep following the line as it crosses various forest roads - it's damn techy but keep the faith. You end up at the halfway point on the chimney, by the bend. Follow that down to the car park.

Go up in the direction of Dead Woman Ditch but cut across to The Great Bear (will be a swampy), the climb to Dowsborough hill fort. Descent the wide stony track to Holford at warp speed. Climb Dogpound aka The Great Road to Bicknoller.

Along the top toward Triscombe Stone. After the final gate before Triscombe Stone, turn right and descend rapido directly to Blue Ball.

I'd suggest a wee hack from triscombe back towards Lydeard on the DH side of the fence and follow fence right around along the slades , till it has dropped to the light gate. Then follow the wide track to the right of the fence with Aisholt common on your right.

Before the track turns to road, you can come back into the slades and pick up one of the many forest roads(FR's) traversing back to Triscombe and the DH trails. If you can keep high, then pick a DH trail, anyone and descend, crossing the various FR's and finally reaching the bottom.

Down from the obvious spring, there's a crossing over the water which picks up a steepish trail heading NE up the hillside. This pops out on the Cockercombe road above dibble's elbow. You can cross over here and climb further up onto the top of GW.

Left here and you'll come to a FR junction. Left takes you towards the road where you can pick up mine and jambos trail or right for the full chimney run.

I'd do our trail, picking up the old dells stump trail as far as the trail widens, then turn right and push the 50m back up to the motorway(the next hard pack wide track)turn right then left back up to the top FR.

Left passing the chimney entrances looking out for the trail that splits off on the right on a slight right turn of the main FR. Go down along here for about 200m(muddy) then as the trail climbs watch out on the left for a trail head. Pop in here and descend over or round jumps, berms and steps till you come out on the Motorway(FR) Caution, here steepish roll in.

Left here for a steady climb up to the top of the chimney and then get that nailed.

That's pretty much the best of GW down that side, with the north side only having FR's to cruise up or down.

So head up to DWD and, down to the the great bear, cross over and ride as far as the lone tree where you can ride through a raised bank and down to the old coach road.

Cross here staying left of the raised bank and stream bed, stay left and high of the obvious ditch right to the bottom.. This is Bincombe. A
At the bottom it's really boggy, so pick up a well trodden path and climb slightly before needing to go off piste to the gate way.

Go through the gate and follow trail, thne road to Nether Stowey.

Find a pub and drink beer...Phone for a lift!

It's not a big singletrack route though.

Apart from the DH trails (about 20 i think now) most of that route around GW and triscombe are forest tracks. After the recent weather i believe you've had there, some of the other trails wouldn't work well.

If you want to take a more informed look at the DH trails, then there's an unoffical Uplift running on occasion there..

If you're on facebook, there's a triscombe group there where dates are posted

Sharki - I remember you raving about some fab downhill near the Chimney that came out near the campsite. If you have a mo, could you describe where it starts, with respect to the top of the Chimney?

Email in profile if you don't want to publicise details.

Stu.

From the top of the actual chimney, continue straight up back to the very top piece of forest track.

Turn left for about 60 metres, as the track begins to turn gently to the right, there's a wide track off to the left.

Take that and splodge through the soft muddy surface till it climbs slightly, before it crests and to the left, there should by now be a very visible trail head, or two.

Pop in there, follow it right into the dank dark woods watching out for the various features of jumps, kickers, doubles, hips, berms, and step downs. Most of these are either rollable or have chicken lines.

It eventually drops onto what locals call the motorway, it's a steep roll in, but nothing daunting for a rider like you. Here i'd recommend pushing back up to session it for fun, as all the kicker look harder than they are.

Back on the motorway, you've the three option to get down.

Left will take you to the top of the chimney.
Right, takes you to forest track over near the Res(on the OS map), then left on a very fast forest track descent to the car park and the bottom of the chimney.

Or

Straight on, for a little surprise of steep, jumpy, bermy, slidey stuff. Popping you out opposite the great wood camp site.

The top section is fun, that's 'sams track'. the bottom aint bad, but too much fall line on the last half of it.
