Ok chaps, following on from my steel fork thread, its been realised that my crown needs facing from JIS (27.0mm) to ISO (26.4mm).
Ive exhausted my LBS's and cycle clubs, it looks like the only place local(ish) to me that has the right tools to face/ream a 1" fork is Chas Roberts in Croydon.
Trouble is thats a mission for me to get to and im struggling to get hold of them on the phone.
Can anyone else recommend a really good bike shop local to Windsor/Twickenham/Heathrow area that may have the tools and expertise to do the job?
I've done it with a file, but it is a ball ache as obviously you need to keep the crown pretty round! If you don't get any luck locally and you trust your filing skillz, it might be the better / quicker option than a big drive.
that'll be a last resort if its proven there are no decent bike shops around anymore ๐ก
๐ I wrench at a decent bike shop, but there are just some tools that are not worth buying, hence having to carefully filing down forks for an hour, sucking it up and not charging labour on top of the normal headset install. Maybe the likes of Roberts will do it if you post it, and they post it back.
vice and side of a good file + finish with emery and some care...
or you could get a local machine shop (jobbing shop) to turn it down on a lathe if you are nervous about filing...
og just remember there is an old school cycle shop in wokingham - KC Sports (they also sell guns) had some old 1" forks from them a year back to sprt out a few old frame (they had a barrel of them(.... they have lots of older / proper bike tools in their workshop- might be worth a tel phone
We have the tools and could do it via post if required

Head for the Hill, Dorking.
Or try Bicycle in Richmond?
Dauphin would be more likely than HftH, not really a common tool, suggest you'll want a shop who are likely to do that sort of bike.
Pearsons in Sutton- they have a tame frame builder.
Pearsons in Sutton can do this. Some of their tools date from the last century (19th that is not 20th!). Roly should know. Check out the cast iron workstand in the ProShop if you go there.
They did this exact job for me recently on a 1 inch fork.
Give Rowan a call at Nirvana he may be able to help
I doubt it, Pearsons would be a far better shout. It's not something that is ever likely to have been used on an MTB, so you want an old school road shop!
