Why?

I mean pictures of pimped-but-dull/average/gopping bikes leant against brick walls, "creatively" hung upside down from log-piles, propped up by fences with the sunset in the background etc

WHY? IT'S JUST BIKE FFS If you want stuff that looks good why not try out an ART GALLERY ❓

I also wonder why people always put there bike in the photo of a nice view, I understand one or two but all of them.

Because they enjoy it - so what?

Ask yourself what's worse, taking pics of your bike, or sitting at home on a Sunday evening getting riled up about other people doing it and writing pissy posts on a mountain bike forum?

Because some people are proud

Because other people may want to look

New thread: Why do people post threads asking questions purely to criticise other people? If it really does stress you then I think you're funny 🙂

Because everyone agrees what good art is in an art gallery don't they 🙄

some of us find bikes aesthetic, some don't. Shock horror, people have different preferences.

That doesn't change whether the bike's aesthetic or not only the level of my camera skills 😉

Because if you're riding solo it's difficult to take a photo of yourself, so it's good to have something that links you to a place. Like

I sort of see whare al is coming from - I like pictures of me riding my bike but endless pictures of " this is my bike at" are terribly dull.

I usually only take a pic after a significant change has been made, just for my own purposes. That pic will get used repeatedly whenever a pic thread pops up. Until the next change. Wassamatter? Grumpy about going to work tomorrow?

I tend to take lots of pics of my bikes mainly so that i have a record of them incase i ever need to claim on my insurance and they querry whats on them. Also like others i tend to ride solo and take scenery pics that my or my not have my bike in as i will depend on where i got off it.

Pictures of nice bikes are nice. Most bikes aren't all that. Seen one hope/thomson/shimano steel hardtail? Seen them all...

I'm fine with pictures of nice bikes, it's those stupid clown Jones contraptions that offend my senses.

Most nice bikes arent all that either. 'funky' hydroformed tubing/white bars and stem/gold finishing kit/carbon effect drivetrain. All very bland and a bit sickly. I hate the look of all the treks/lapierres/whatever else, even though Im sure they ride very well.

A pic of a merlin hardtail covered in mud is more interesting

unfortunately, the point of my post was that a bike isn't intrinsically interesting, it's what you use it for :o)

It would be poor taste if bb had known, sounds more like an unfortunate comment. Deepest sympathy to al, I've been there and it's really bad, but seems a bit harsh to pile the guilt on bb.

My mum's still about but getting ever shakier - I do find mum jokes pretty offensive though, generally the last resort of the low IQ types. Have a go at my dad if you must - he carked it when I was 2, and I've yet to laugh at that.

As for the OP, I'm not bothered at all about what people post, but 2 of the 3 pics posted prove my point perfectly. I will fight for my right to tell them it's dull/ugly with my life!

I can sort of understand the thought process behind taking a pic of your bike.
The one I don't get is the whole thing of filming yourself and mates out riding. WHY,WHY,WHY?????? You'll never look like The Collective, get a grip - its like home made porn, idea seems good but its avarage unremarkable people grunting and sweating (and no I haven't)!

I think the helmet vids are probably the funniest. I imagine most people get one and then realise they're crap and then sell them on.

Plenty of people don't like photos/videos at all, I suspect this is just a continuation of this trend. I like having photos and vid of me and my mates so that 12 months down the line I can remember a fun day while flicking through the files. Very few people are actually hoping to make a professional looking video, or take heart-stopping photos, but people like to keep a record of what they've done and who with, and memories of fun times.

I think the helmet vids are probably the funniest. I imagine most people get one and then realise they're crap and then sell them on.

I quite like my helmet cam vids (when properly mounted!) there's nothing crap about them, they provide entertainment without the pretence of being a pro level video. Though I do struggle to find the time to edit together a few gigs of video, it's something to do on a quiet night with a beer and the TV.

By god, this thread really does show who the miserable gits are, doesn't it?!

I think you mean blind people...

actually I find the concept of a sighted person not liking photographs as outlandish as a non-deaf person not liking music! Are there really such people ?

I don't mind them. And I'll keep posting them.

But I genuinely pity the sensitive types to have to suffer threads about my bland bike and riding.

Perhaps a "BLAND:" prefix would save their suffering?

Odd isnt it, but I know a few people who just can't be bothered with them, they hate you stopping to take photos and then are not interested in seeing them at the end. I can only assume they have really good memories or just too much going on in life to spare the time.

I get a bit bored of all the "bike in the back yard" photos, unless they're proving/showing something like "this is what X looks like with Y", but photo's of bikes in nice places or novel places are great.

Hear, hear. And I second AlasdairMc's point above about solo riding and photography. My main reason is to show my boys where I took my bike 'thi stime'. They'll inevitably say, "Wow dad," which brings a rosy glow to begin with but then they'll want to get their bikes out and ride somewhere. Job done.

Also, and I'm just guessing here, a mountain bike forum in a broadband saturated country with a dominant visual culture isn't the best place to be if you don't want to see photos of bikes. Maybe the OP could set his browser not to show pictures; iconoclasm is sooooo 9th century tho'.

I don't own a camera, If I occasionally need to take a photo, I borrow the wife's
There's probably only one photo of my bike in existence
I never bother with holidays either, I went to Colorado riding earlier this year & didn't bother with a camera

There is only one photo of me as a child [that I know about] so maybe it's an hereditary thing?

I have taken the odd picture of my bikes, in the back garden once built up (For insurance purposes only of course), propped against a tree in the woods, at the top of a climb I may have struggled with… I like having the odd record of what my bikes looked like when new/clean, and where I’ve ridden them, I don’t tend to share the pic’s really.

As for helmet cam’s, I use mine once in a blue moon, it looks shite, all shakey and lots of wind noise but I don’t mind, I probably get 20 seconds of “acceptable” footage for every 10 hours I record on it, so far I have accrued maybe 40 second of worthwhile viewing, typically the person in front stacking and me piling into them…

I certainly don’t object to other peoples posted photo’s or videos, I like bikes and I like riding, and I enjoy seeing what others have been up to and what they are riding, it doesn’t have to be beautifully framed or properly focused it’s just a way of sharing their experiences. Plus how much effort is it to scroll on down past the “Bland” pic’s or click back, other forum’ tend to have a specific area to shove picture posts maybe the STW misery squad would benefit from something similar for them to avoid…

Having said that it’s not so odd to expect to see photographs with bikes in on a chuffing bicycle forum is it? You grumpy old ****ers.....

Agreed - too much foreground and the juxtaposition of the factory bike spoils the shot thus proving the OP point.
