Is there a legal amount of overhang allowed from the rear of a motorbike? I have a rack and an idea as to mount it so the lights are unobstructed but it will stick out a fair way.
Cheers.

Perhaps some guidance here.

A guy on my other forum manages with just panniers & straps

But looks like a secondary consideration in the States

What bike?

I remember a picture of a chap with a DH bike strapped to the pillion of a Pan-European, but they've panniers too so little overlap.

Also since a top-box usually hangs over the numberplate, as long as its 'sensible' you should be fine.

This looks good (I just googled 'motor bike mtb rack':
