PSA(ish?) - Halford...

[Closed] PSA(ish?) - Halford's fork service "Sent to FOX" - £90 inc shipping both ways?

Happened to pop into my local Halfords - wanted to use their shock pump (mine was at home), so made up a half-arsed story about "maybe wanted to look at getting my forks serviced, but could I use your pump then if it still is crap after ride I'll come in and talk about service".

He says hold on, goes behind counter. "We don't do anything here or at any halfords, but we have a generic flat fee for all FOX forks, send them to Fox for you, and a standard rebuild / all seals, oil, e.t.c, courier both ways for £90ish".

This is cheaper than both Loco and J-tech - especially for the more complex forks i.e. fit / talas / rc2 - am I to assume that he was telling porkies about sending them to Fox? I asked "Do you mean Mojo", and he said "No, fox themselves".

Not that I actually need my suspension serviced, mind, and I used their pump, but it does sound either like a rip off or a great deal.

Anyone weigh in?

there is no "fox themsevles" in the UK. Mojo is the importer for Fox here in the UK so I guess they'd be sent to Mojo(fox uk)

Apparently £90 for a "Full normal service including seals and oils". "More if you need something new in there, like tubes or something". His words.

Worth following up, could be a cheap way to get a Mojo service?

The rear shock was like 70ish.

No it's not. Unless your forks are 36 Talas or FIT - I read your post as they are not - then theservice is £63 plus postage (£13 from them) but even double this is still less than £90

By £1, and only on 32 van/float non-fit.

The very cheapest loco tuning is, yes, 63. Plus 13 quid back to you, plus at least 13 quid to him (you need to pay for insurance, but on the way back you're covered by your statutory rights that nothing is wrong), say £20?

Shiet, even if you send it back for 13 quid, that's £89. For the very cheapest 32 van or float non-fit.

If you have any of the following: 32 Talas, any fit damper, any 36 fork, any 40 fork, it is a LOT cheaper.

But isn't the question more "has anyone had this done / what is the con here"?

Perhapse there isn't one?

Either, halfords have a standard rate which they've set too low.

Or, They get a bulk discount from MOJO to send all their FOX forks to them.

Wide your neck in love.

It's still cheaper and you said it was £90ISH from Halfords.

Perhaps you should have asked how much it was for your particular model of forks and got a quote from them? That way at least you could compare like for like.

They probably do have a bulk rate from Mojo and take advantage of a discounted delivery service too, however I suspect they'll charge more for a FIT or a Talas but without asking I don't know.

As long as the forks are going off to Mojo then, on the face of it, it sounds a good deal by simply saving the effort of having to post them yourself. But based on the shit and vague information you've posted it's hard to tell.

I wouldn't even trust them to be able to package them properly TBH

No way I would let Halfords near my forks. Could just be me but sorry my experience of Halfords mechanics is not good so there is no way I would even consider this.

M1kfan, you seem to have a talent for being unnecessarily rude and obnoxious.

Firstly, I said "£90ish", because it was something like £91.46, and I couldn't remember the exact cost.

Secondly, I think you'll find that in my first post I stated:

generic flat fee for all FOX forks

I do apologise if that sounds "vague and shit", if you want, I'm happy to try and explain it to you in more simple terms.

For sending forks to Mojo it shouldn't be £20.

Courier will be about £5.80 + vat

and then insuance (eg parcel monkey):

+ £0.14 for £50 of cover
+ £1 for £100 of cover
+ £2.50 for £200 of cover
+ £4.00 for £300 of cover
+ £6.00 for £400 of cover
+ £8.00 for £500 of cover
+ £10.00 for £600 of cover
+ £12.50 for £700 of cover
+ £15.00 for £800 of cover
+ £17.50 for £900 of cover
+ £20.00 for £1000 of cover

Parcelforce is more expensive unless you have an account in which case it is quite cheap. If you can afford a £1000 fork then you won't be bothered about a few £ anyway.

even if it does cost a few £ more I would rather send to who I choose and be the point of contact and deal with them myself.

Spoke to my local Halfords and they told me that they act as a middle man for TF Tuned.

The store in question has a large cycling division and I was told that the full costs including postage would be passed on through to me.

Just thought it worth mentioning.

When I bought my first Mountain bike back in 1988 from Halfords a Specialized Hardrock the sales assistant told my Dad that Carrera owned Specialized, my Dad knew his stuff and told him otherwise.

If you couldn't remember what the price was then putting "£90ish" in the quote marks is confusing. It reads as that is what they said to you. What else did you wrongly quote? The "all Fox forks" perhaps?

Fair enough we all write posts devoid of saleant information from time to time but don't spit the dummy when people respond to your misinformation.

It still doesn't change the fact that it isn't cheaper than Loco for 'lesser model' Foxs'.

andyl has shown that an insured delivery service doesn't cost as much as you are proclaiming.

Whether or not the service offers value depends on your model of Fox fork. If it is a 'base' 32 R then it offers no value. If it's a Talas, Fit, 36 or 40 then it would appear to offer value.

"Sent to Fox themselves"

Could mean Halfords have taken on a tech from Mojo and hes training up a few people in a unit to do this.

Would need clarification from Halfords or Mojo IMO.

They might actually say 'by trained tech's to Fox's standards'?

My local Halfords send to TFTuned, £70 for a rear shock and you avoid all the hassle of postage/being in for the courier etc.

As well as full bicycle servicing, we can also service certain bike parts:
Suspension Services
Basic fork service - £19.99
Comprehensive fork service - £93.20
Comprehensive shock service - £75.00
Brake and Gear Service - £29.99
For full information on servicing bike parts, contact your local store.

From Halfords Site

Sounds like you could take a Talas etc and hope they don't notice and get the cheaper service/argue like hell etc.

Wish I'd known have 2 forks that nobody will service!!

Do they offer a polishing service also ?

mk1fan must have quite a selection of Pedant of the Year medals to keep shiny.
