Any reason why I shouldn't buy the carbon ams?

I have a set of the carbon AMs and have been super impressed; I have hammered them in the Scottish Enduro Series, EWS and Tweedlove enduros plus just day-to-day riding and they are still true. Strange feeling initially as you get so much more trail feedback so had to play with suspension settings and tyre pressures a bit but I love putting the front wheel somewhere and it just goes there!

Trying to not look at this or I will order a set of the carbon 26" wheels for £300 or one of the Stans sets for £150.

Cheers tom, that sounds great.. Hovering on the button! The only thing putting me off is Mega next year on carbon rims, have you actually rimmed out hard on them yet?

Well good reviews from dirt, Bikeradar and pinkbike can't be far off. Plus crash replacement and 2 year warranty. I've ordered a set

Yep, with a WTB tyre on - I expected to hear a massive hiss and a trashed tyre but both survived comfortably. Bearings are good quality, only thing I haven't figured out is how to change them (not that I need to).

The offer ones are switch ultra lite rather than tesla so not what they normally lace them to. As far as i csn tell the only difference between switch ultra and ultra lite is the front hub is a bit lighter and won't take a 20mm axle. Hopefully they'll be fine, otherwise I'll lace them to my pro ii evos

Abigale has the AM carbons which we bought in the last sale. They have had a lot of abuse over the summer and the rear spokes needed quite a bit of tightening after our second week in Verbier. The nipples aren't up to much and will probably get them changed in the near future. Hubs seem to be good. She gave them a good pounding at the Grizedale Enduro yesterday including a flat on stage three. For the price you cant go wrong.

I rode the Mega this year on carbon rims, including a shortish section on a flat tyre up top (where its rocky!). No problems at all.

Its not what you spend, its how much you've saved. Works in our house.

Yeah I would have had the CKs but they were the wrong axles for me. I'm pretty sure they could be changed but I didn't want to start researching, I'd have ended up buying them!

Edit: Tracey that would be a very slippery slope for me!

Indeed, I took delivery of some LB AM rims 32 spoke, possibly over built for my use, but to be safe. 27mm inside, 33mm outside, 3mm walls, hookless, with the hope2 evo 40t hubs, fully built £650 all in,tax, delivery etc.

As marsellus Wallace would say, I'm one smiling mother ******.

Real effort to put the tyres on though, I have folding tyres and it was still an effort.

I'm 15mm up front, they were offering all axle sizes for their own wheels but the ones highlighted in red were only available in the size stated on the spreadsheet

They have released a new model, tesla ultra or something else.

My original teslas are taking lots of abuse pretty well though to be fair

My Carbon Am's arrived it was the most difficult rim I have ever put a tyre on, not sure what will happen (bar a long walk) if I get a puncture on the trail, I did them with hands and tyre levers so there is a hope of trail side repair, but still not easy and took a lot of time and effort, seating the bead also hard work a 50:50 washing up liquid to water ratio for the most stubborn bit.

Then when I came to fit them rear wheel wrong adapters 12mm still but I am guessing 135 as not wide enough, so quick mail and superstar to their credit sent them next day with double haribo so that's ok then 🙂

So now they are all built up on the bike and all being well will ride on them this Sunday.

Use a soap solution rather than washing up liquid, soap is much slippier and doesn't foam up. I just pop the soap bar in a small bowl of hot water.

Has anyone bought one of their discounted Pacenti / Switch wheelsets?

I'm thinking of going for the TL28 build but reviews for those rims seem extremely polarized.

Had the same problem fitting Butcher/Purgatory combo to Abigales AMs. Ended up using a spray of Fairy/water mix and some heavy duty tyre levers. It was also very difficult to get the tyre to pop on to the rime and seat properly. She had a flat on the rear on stage three of the Grizedale Enduro and rang to say she couldn't get the tyre off. The marshal at the bottom managed to do it for her without even using tyre levers. She is next in line for a tubeless conversion, just need to get the nipples changed as they aren't up to much.
Bought a second set last week for Kevins Christmas present and thinking of getting brass nipples fitted before even using them.

Depends on how you are with wheels. I'm quite light on them generally, so for UK riding they were great.

Took them t the Alps and Megavalanche and was a bit heavier on them and the rims took a fair few dents. easy enough to bend back and tyres burped a fair bit. They needed a bit of tweaking, but could be put pretty well back into shape. After a week or so they'd had it though and are really only fit for the bin.

Can't complain really given the price/weight, but I wouldn't buy them again.

I feel happier reading stories that it's not that easy to fit tyres, thanks for sharing, noted on soap bar good call.

Thanks woodster. They'd be going on my short travel full sus for general trail / xc riding and I'm also fairly light so they wouldn't take a beating. Might give them a punt for the price.

ok...just seen this and need some wider rims after burping my tyres (Mavic Crossmax on Mavic Deemax) constantly last week in Finale.

currently know knowing about wheelsets.

can someone point me towards a good soild, stable tubeless 26" wheelset that will take UST 2.4" tyres? looking around 400 notes.

cheers...

Mine turned up today, look nice but the spokes seem pretty loose to me. If I squeeze two crossed spokes the cross moves about 15mm, is that right? Are carbon rims designed for lower spoke tensions or something

hmm, mine are pretty damn tight, so maybe yours are just loose.

BTW it took me a long time and much swearing and hurting to get a HRII onto those AM's - i did not use Soap, so when the front axle turns up i shall try that. Still not ridden them yet, tomorrow is D Day.

I did also find out that my HRII's had many holes in - a bit like a sieve actually, but finally all sealed up after about half a pint of spunk..

My LBs were hand built at 18 Bikes and haven't been touched. All the spokes are still tight. After our third week in the Alps Abigales back wheel spokes were very loose. Had them re tightened but the nipples arnt up to much. Will need to get them changed. Still good wheels for the price.

So on closer inspection the edge of the rim has lots of small holes and one major deformation, the holes probably won't cause an issue but have removed any trust at all in their process. I will be sending these back
