Off to Italy for a week and I've got a pass to hire a MTB for a day (booked a few days on the north end of Lake Garda on purpose ๐ ).
I assume they have a selection of common pedals (flat/SPD) or do I need to take some? I normally ride SPDs but figured it made more sense to just ride in my trail running shoes as I can use these for hiking and flats.
Taking my helmet and clothing (shorts will double up as swim shorts) & GPS with spare bike mount. Tool wise I guess I can just pack a small puncture kit, tyre levers and a pump but no multi-tool?
Was going to take my camelbak Mule as my 2nd bag on the plane and strap my helmet and pads to the outside but I've just realised the bladder is technically a water container so am I allowed this in hand luggage? I guess the only other option is just buy a couple of bottles of water when I am there?
Probably should have sorted this a bit sooner ๐ณ
I always take pedals and shoes, use what you are comfortable with, helmet as hand luggage - as for tools etc. mail a couple of places that hire bikes and see what they do. Easy enough to stuff a bladder in your hold bag for the flight.
I'd have thought that it's the liquid that's the problem, not an empty container. I'm not an expert so don't rely on this advice, check before you travel...
Bladder is so small that it should fit in the hold luggage (if you have any) otherwise there is a good selection of outdoor shops in Arco a short bus ride from Riva.
Tyre levers need to be plastic not metal else they'll get removed from hand luggage.
Put spds and shoes , multi tool , tube and pump inside the mule.
Put the mule into your hold lugage.
You are over thinking it.
Did the same recently to avoid flying with my bike to california.
Only issue i ran into was modern shimano brakes on one bike not liking being used upside down as the brakes come hosed up for left hand front brake, which wasnt an issue at all while riding.
not taking any hold luggage which is the concern with bladder and multi-tool, so I guess it will be easier to just take the empty bag and buy a couple of bottles of water.
I did email the shop I was going to hire from but no reply. Just tried again, but this is the small print on their prices page:
Open all day with continuous opening times
Different Cube bike types
Specialized personel can help you
Different rental times from 2 hours up to several days
Technicans for the dayle maintainment
On-line Booking
Bike stabels for several day rentals
Rent kit with helmet, bag and equipment
Possibility to rent full helmets and protections
Bike Bottles and drinks for reasonable prices
Maps of the territory
Bike Shuttle starting point
Bike Tours starting point
I would rather my own helmet for obvious reasons.
My Camelbak mule JUST complies with the second bag rule (35x20x20) but I think I will be pushing it trying to fit my SPD shoes and pedals into my luggage. I will have so see how well I can pack. Irritatingly the OH bought a bag that is A LOT smaller than the max allowed whereas mine is bang on the limit. I suspect it may dawn on her at 9 o'clock tonight that she should have got a bigger bag or we should have just checked a bag into the hold.
I suspect I will be wearing my knee pads around my calves and if push comes to shove wear my helmet.
