Why on earth would you need a 36t sprocket if you have a 22t inner ring? !

Most 'proper' 2x10 cranks have a 26t inner ring. Shimano and SRAM are now only just bringing out 2x10 cranksets with 24t inner rings specifically for 29ers.

Why on earth would you need a 36t sprocket if you have a 22t inner ring? I'd go 11-32 if I was running 2x10 to give smaller jumps in gears through the range. A 22-36 gear must be like beating an egg, going round and round and not travelling anywhere!

You're not wrong.

Most of the newer 10spd cranksets seem to have a 24t inner ring which when combined with a 36t top sprocket produces pretty much the same gear as 22-32.

It's Only really worth using an 11-36 cassette if you go for something like a 24/38 or 26/40 double, similar bottom gear for climbing slightly higher top gear for whatever you might need it for...

Hadn't really thought of using a 26T inner with a double. I tended to run 22-36 up front and 11-32 back when I did, but I can see the point of a 40T chainring when there is a lot of xc/flatter riding, or mainly insanely fast DH riding involved.

One question - what's going to happen to all these unloved left hand shifters with the increase in 1x10? 🙂 I know I have one going spare!

36/22 at the front I reckon.. What's the collective opinion in the best option then?
Btw, haven't got mine yet, but asked for them to be sent to work 😉

I use shifter windows and miss them when I don't have them. I sometimes find myself running top sprocket with big ring etc.

BUT, 1x10 should solve all of life's problems! 🙂

There's two BIG differences.
One - a bike has a lot more gears
Two - in a car the gear lever is in a different position in each gear. So you can feel which gear its in

If you've time to look at a shifter window, you're going too slowwwwwww!

Or you're actually pretty observant and experienced and can spare the brain power to look down. I can look at my motorbike speedo at 140mph..... So I'm damned sure I can look at my MTB shifters at a fraction of that!

I like shifter windows.

Or you're pretty inexperienced and can't tell by pedalling if you're in an appropriate gear or not.....

Each to their own though!.

So you pedal all the time do you?
And also, you can be in an appropriate gear but in the wrong chainring.....

I've never felt the need for shifter windows.Gears are done by feel or by predicting an upshift or downshift as you read the trail.

Try riding without them!

You'l soon see how spurious they really are..

Yep, usual CRC big box turned up. Not so much of a bargain, had to buy a new frame to fit my bargain 10 spd shifters to!

Depends on how much you want to pay, but SLX is good, especially the 2013 stuff.

I'm going for ZEE to go on my DJ/Muck-about bike in the new year purely for the short cage.

Mlucas, what's different about the 2013 stuff. Crc have the 2013 mech for a fiver more than the old one. It looks different, but doesnt seem to have the fancy clutch feature...?

The ebay sellers are humorous. Loads of left only for sale, plus plenty of the no window pairs for £40 or so. Shame a good deal on crc has to end up as profit in someone's pocket instead of on the bike of people without much spare cash!

Sorry, meant the ones with the Clutch.

I don't suppose there's much difference between the pre-2013 SLX and 2013 SLX (non clutch) mechs in performance, if anything at all, but the 2013 models do look nicer IMO.

I'm with glasgowdan, I missed out, shame so many people are selling on eBay I counted about 15 pairs, but that's life I guess, have agreed to buy a rear 10 speed of a pal £17.50 still a bargin!

Kid cragg, you don't need to buy a 10speed front mech. If you have a 9speed triple front mech, just set the stop so far across that it acts as a double, if you get what I mean?.

No. I like them. Why should I take them off..? I don't have to do what you say, and riding without them doesn't make you better than me. 🙂

Ever thought that those selling them don't have much spare cash either and are using the profits to keep cycling? 🙂
