Goldtec are now making elliptical rings for singlespeed use, had a go on a demo version and it's as good as rotor Q ring and apparently is going to about half the price and they will be doing a range of sizes.

I love my rotor but blinkin flip are they expensive to this could be a good way to try it without ending up bankrupt.

That keefy chap has played with my demo ring and now won't give it back! 😥

but seriously,if you aint tried one, give it a go,I couldn't believe the difference, smoother spinning, easier on the steep 'gurners' I've gone from 34/19,to 35/19,if I thought it would stay dry I'd go 35/18,it really does make that much difference !

Taz,you can have it back.......

when I can buy a production one,and not before ! 😉

Nice one! I was going to get me a rotor ring. My old shop have started doing them, but this might be cheaper than trade.

I was going to ask this anyway though, if I'm currently on a 32/17 do I want a 33 or 34? Was thinking 33..

realistically 2 teeth up for the same amount of effort seems to be about the rule of thumb. 34 or 35 19 on a 29er seems to be a magic ratio that I can quite happily mosh round an enduro for hours or over the peak and north wales so I'd say try a 34T

Cheers! I'd found my happy place with 32/17, so was thinking that if 33/17 turned out too low, then going to 33/16 would be a cheaper way of changing it rather than buying another expensive chainring.. Shall just man up and get me a 34.
Do you know when they'll be available? They're not on the site yet.

I may be being daft but what happens to your chain tension with all this ellipticalness going on up front?

it goes slightly slack and slightly tight. The trick is to set up the tension with the crank a 4 O'clock position and most elliptical part of the ring vertical. Works like magic, no need for a chain tensioner and doesn't drop the chain.

cheers... keen to try one of these on the SS, otherwise I'm gonna have to gear it down for the longer / hillier days and that'll mean too much spin on the flat. bloody singlespeeds, always in the wrong gear..

Could I do this with an old Biopace ring?

I remember Biopace, it was foul! although sheldon brown did run a fixie with it. In all honesty and avoiding the obvious troll then no, biopace was designed with a different idea in mind and new style ellipticals like the rotor Q, the goldtec 1ke and the REALLY eliptical chis bell egg rings are designed to give you maximum grunt at the point where the legs are stongest.

By having the chainring at its peak effective diameter with the cranks level, that is, where the rider has maximum leverage over the crank during the power stroke, better use can be made of the rider's power output.

Biopace chainrings do almost exactly the opposite to this, having the reduced chainring diameter coinciding with the cranks being horizontal. The reason this is beneficial is that it tends to smooth the pedalling action, allowing the rider's feet to carry a lot of momentum through the power stroke, having it smoothly removed at the bottom of the stroke rather than encouraging riders to push bigger gears and risk knee damage due to higher knee joint loadings.

In reality biopace were hideous things and the new style rings from various companies seem to work a treat. I've also got mangled knees and the rotors et al have stopped the knee pain when really spinning fast

So is there any actual real difference then?

What if I rotated a Biopace ring? Ran it oriented differently to what it sez on the packet?

no, none whatsoever, it's all just marketing hype selling a tired old idea to a gullible new audience. 😉

you never know elfin you could be onto something, you can get all the old biopace on ebay re name them elfinrings and sell them to pro road teams and the specialized xc race boys for a tenner cheaper than the rotors they use at the moment, you'll be rich I tell ya, RICH 😀

Heh!

I rember when Biopace was the Latest Thing and fun to show off to yer mates. And reading rave reviews by magazine journos claiming an X% increase in their pedalling efficiency.

Then Shimano decided Round was the new Biopace, and suddenly Biopace was rubbish and Round was the Latest Thing.

I bet they're still chuckling to themselves over that one....

XTR M900 mechs, XT thumbies, XT SLR levers, a few old rings, some other bits. Maybe even a set of Ringle Ti QR skewers.

I expect I'll make a fortune. 🙂

I ran a 48t biopace without a tensioner on my commuter for 18 months.

Only issue I found was it made the rear cog elliptical too!!!

Was good fun too:

You could rotate them enough to give you a bigger gear in the power stroke though. That's what I did when it was all trees because they hadn't been felled for fields yet. Then I discovered the insanity that is round rings.

Guys,

I have been offering some Biopace rings here for weeks, waiting for this type of posting to come along.
Biopace were for 7-speed, so use a 3/32" chain.
They were without pins and ramps, so could be put on 'inside-out' and rotated one hole to give the 'power' position mentioned above.

I have the following items that are still up for grabs:

LX M500 crankset, 170mm Square Taper, with 48T Alloy Biopace, 38T Alloy Biopace and 24T Steel Round all on 110/74mm BCD, very nearly new.

Silver 48T steel Biopace 110mm ring

Black 48T steel Biopace 110mm ring

Black 38T steel Biopace 110mm ring

Black 28T steel Biopace 74mm ring

Silver 28T steel Biopace 74mm ring

Mail me for more details if interested.

Elliptical rings work* - in fact you soon get so used to them that round rings feel funny when you go back to them...

* when correctly orientated!
