Christmas does seem a very long time ago. Did anyone have a race wearing the paper crowns from their crackers? Who won?

Turns out some Cannondales don’t join in with the clown race

Just for a read or do you have new info which might help us answer the OP's question?

The head set is inserted into the head tube. The forks have a crown and legs. So shouldn't the steerer be called the neck or something else bodily?

8 years. Brilliant. It's like a time capsule.

Will headsets still come with a race after Brexit?

It's been 2 years since I last looked at this thread. I'm glad to see that despite Brexit it's still going strong.

there was a post on one of the early pages asking if the site would support a thread with more than a 1000 posts.

*looks at Brexit thread*

I reckon this ones got more longevity and just needs a bit of careful tending for another 9 years to get it to 100,000 posts.

The range of variables in headsets and steerers and forks today is driving me mad, last two headsets, I identified wrong, fortunately they swopped parts and work out.

Shouldn't they work left, then right, then left, then straight on etc, etc, ad infinitum?
You could make an 'off-set headset' for spiral trails I s'pose.

Yes he did have a clown's face?
What was he doing with it, where did he get and does the clown want it back?

I was actually wondering the other day where I can get a crown race from - found a spare unused one in my toolbox. But that sort of question always makes me think of this thread!!😂

Haven't read the whole thread, but I think they come with the headset when you buy one.

Just in case the OP was still wondering.

I just wondered if the crown race came with a new headset. I had the idea that it might come with the fork.
Or something to do with clowns.

This is my virgin dabble (😳) on this thread and i have a question:

So which bit exactly is the crown race? Cos the bit which fits on the forks isn't technically a race is it, as bearings don't run directly on it these days. What would you call it, a shoulder? Surely the lower part of the sealed bearing unit is the crown race now.

Any engineers care to elucidate?

Of course the answer may already be on this thread, but I'm not backtracking through that lot.

@40mpg It's not technically a race, as you correctly point out, but if that is the name it has been given then it is the crown race even if it isn't a race. A bottom bracket is neither a bracket nor at the bottom

Crown shoulder bearing race support just doesn't have the same ring to it.

It's the year 2025. So much in the world has changed or gone away or been destroyed, but crown races are still a thing.

No-one has come up with a cunning idea that means we don't need them anymore.

No-one has standardised them so that they can be built into the fork.

There are still loads of different types.

You still need a special tool. Or a bit of pipe. Or you can saw one partially in half. Or get type that means you actually don't need a special tool, but only if you're very lucky or rich, or lucky and rich.

Good luck.

Worth a bump to make sure anyone using the new forum is aware that headsets usually come with a crown race.

No-one has come up with a cunning idea that means we don't need them anymore.

Now are you certain that’s true? I’m sure I’ve seen forks that were designed to have the bearing placed directly on them.
Integrated crown race fork or something.

But when I buy a bracket ... should it come with a bottom?

Not entirely true, many road bikes that come as a frame set i.e. frame and forks as a package have an integrated crown race designed into the forks, probably not standardised though and true for mtb.

I have replaced most of my crown races with sealed ,high pressure ,honey pots. Very smooth and seem to eliminate trail buzz.
