Can i use the powerlink of my sram chain on a kmc one? Also anyone tell me if KMC chains are any good? i have always used sram but had a couple break on me recently
yes & yes KMC chains are very good.
I think there's a slight width difference on the 8 speed stuff. I had a problem last year when I could use and remove KMC power links on KMC chains but once on, I couldn't get SRAM ones off again. Had to use a chain cracker in the end.
8 speed though. and KMC seem to be good, they do a nice light one for ~£30. However, they don't last any longer (or shorter) than SRAM/Shimano. I'd buy KMC again for weight saving not longevity.
9 speed KMC can use sram powerlinks but are b@stards to get off.
I spent ~£30 on a shiny gold chain a while back and it has snapped twice. I have never had a Shimano one snap on me. A sample of 1 is not representative but I will be back to Shimano and saving the cash difference.
I had a couple of SRAM chains snap on me, but only after following advice in a mag that said you can keep the powerlink as a spare & join it using a chain tool. Using the powerlink is essential, unless it's just a get you home bodge.
KMC seem to be the tougest ones, but even more vital to use the powerlink as they really don't join with a chain tool at all. This is because of the heavy punch riveting on the pins - makes them tough but makes a mess of the plates if you use a chain tool.
