Just been to the Lakes for a lovely weekend biking, slightly spoiled by visiting the above pub. Friday night popped in to 'The Golden Rule'. Initially 4/5 swelling to 7/8, no-one had drunk more than three pints, time was about 7.30ish. The first group had taken up the remaining seats fairly close to the roaring fire, which was not what anyone wanted as it was very, very hot (probably why they were the only seats free). The remainder joined and pulled up a couple of stools from nearby tables, having first asked the corresponding patrons. All of a sudden a little man (I presume the landlord) comes rushing out shouting aggressively that we were blocking the fire and had moved his furniture. Completely stunned all the group finished their drinks to leave, one friend who used to live locally asked everyone to leave (which they did) and then waited patiently at the bar to express his upset at the licencee's discourteous attitude. I stayed as I had concerns for my friend's safety and watched from a short distance away. He asked what we had done to upset him, apparently 'we had blocked the fire' and 'it is on the website'. My friend explained that he had been visiting the pub for over 20 years and was frankly amazed at how rude he was and how badly he was treating paying customers. The landlord then became more aggressive saying that he wouldn't discuss the matter and there was 'only one way he (my friend) was leaving through the front door or the back'. This didn't make sense but I assumed it was some sort of veiled threat so ushered my friend from the pub. As we left other patrons expressed their astonishment to us at the landlord's behaviour and thanked us for not lowering ourselves to his level, not joining in with the abuse. As we left through the door he shouted after us 'And don't call the Mountain Rescue tomorrow'. Again another bizarre comment, thankfully we didn't need to but I am sure if we had needed them they would have assisted in their usual faultless manner.
Hats off to the Mountain Rescue who thankfully we didn't need and thumbs down to The Golden Rule, Ambleside.
Please don't give the man your hard earned cash.
Whilst I do not and cannot encourage violence I did think the man deserved a flat nose, sooner or later if he continues to behave like that he will find someone that will be more than happy to oblige.
Sorry for the ramble!!!

What a twunt - you'd think he'd appreciate the well-known appetite for ale of the thirsty mountain biker!
