I have an old road bike with 27" wheels, I had some semi decent wheels built and now I'm wondering about moving them onto a more modern frame.
A quick measure shows the radius with a 32c ish tyre of about 345mm opposed to a 700c wheel with a 23c tyre of about 340mm. Hub is a sturmey archer with a weird width of around 118mm.
So, given these rough measuremets will I fit these wheels in a Pompino? V-brakes should have enough adjustment to cope with the 4mm difference in rim diameter right?
Any other frame options, was also thinking roadrat but they're getting a bit expensive.
I'd be surprised if they don't fit. Brakes could be a bit more of an issue. Are you talking purely road use? Not many treaded 630 tyres out there afaik.
Cheers Sam, yup purely road use, mostly with a kiddie seat fitted. SJS have an ok selection of 27" tyres if anyone is looking.
Should do, if your worried (or if its easy) 2x1 or a 2mm spacer would make the rear wheel the right width.
As for brakes, Mavic made a doodahh for running 700c wheels in 26" frames, find one of those as a guide, then sketch out one the correct size of your needs and find someone with a milling machine and time on their hands. Failing that a decent framebuilder will braze some new brake mounts on.
Or, try a BMX U-brake, they might just be the right size.
But after all that, scouring ebay and the local tip for a 27" bike might be easier or having some 700c wheels built might be cheeper!
I have a tip frame already, just thinking about lightening it up a bit, though pompinos are not exactly weight weenies....
Mainly have an urge to spend some money, which has just been satisfied with a td-1 frame in the crc sale, so I think this will be staying as it is for a while
