SRAM. Ideally, it would be XT but for £75rrp Shimano can go and swivel.

XT has better mud clearing ability IMO, but they are expensive.

... oh and it's not like it's muddy at the moment.

40 quid XT's as the weight difference is noticeable if its going on an already light wheelset, and Hope alloy freehub bodies need cassettes with ally carriers to avoid getting chewed up.

XT cassette (mainly for the alloy carrier) with Deore chainrings

Would only choose XT now. Definitely worth the extra imo

I got loads of life out of a PG970 cassette, I used 2 chains and my mate still uses the cassette with a 3rd chain without any problems. Got an XT now and will see how it compares, but the 970 managed to outlive an Lx cassette I had before. I wouldn't pay the rrp for an XT cassette as I just don't think I need such an expensive part if the 970 or Deore does the same for me and just can't see any noticeable difference now that I have an XT cassette on. It's nice to have good bits on the bike, but if You can't justify or afford it than no need to spend that much. I'm not bothered by the weight difference as well. If You can get a cheap XT than do it, if not, than deore will do, especially during winter.

XT cassette here too... On one bike at least. SRAM PG980 on the other.

Would always run XT out of choice primarily cos of the alloy sprocket carrier meaning they don't eat into ally or ti freehubs. SRAM PG980 and 990 have one too, but don't seem quite as long lasting. But the 980 was cheaper than an XT by a margin when I needed a new cassette last time, hence I bought that.

Wouldn't run a Deore personally, more to do with lack of decent sprocket carrier and use with softer metal freehubs than anything else.

XT, as you cant run lower on a ProII hub without mangling it.

Hope hubs here, so no choice but to go for a dearer cassette with alloy carrier....(SRAM PG990 lasts at least twice as long as an XT in my opinion)

Cassettes are probaby the only justifiable upgrade from slx to XT (or maybe shifters too) imo.

My XT cassette is now on its 5th chain and still shifts perfectly. Much lighter than Deore too, and don't forgets it's rotating mass you're saving.

XT: Deore cassettes are heavy, so why spoil a light(ish) bike with a heavy cassette?

and don't forgets it's rotating mass you're saving.

That argument only really works at the outside of a wheel.

I always went for XT until I decided pretty much pointless in the winter so now use deore in the mud - don't notice the weight and the extra strength is good - I have damaged an XT cassette when the shifting went bad....

XX

All 10 sprockets on a carrier, sort of.

Not that it really matters, replacing the hub would be cheaper than the cassette...

The biggest difference between Deore/XT is the weight IMO, it is significant, and I would buy XT on that alone.

The ones I've weighed:
PG970 400g
XTR 242g
KCNC 163g
all 11-34

And on my sons bikes
Shimano HG-30 (11-32) - 370g
replaced by
SRAM PG850 (12-23) - 170g

The KCNC ones get lighter every ride as they shed teeth too!

A mere £300 at retail, small change!

Hopefully by the time mine wears out they'll have released XTR M980 or whatever it'll be and there will be other options on 10 speed cassettes!

XT normally, but have been known to use PG970s when poor, depends what's on offer at the time.

I'd probably consider PG980 and SLX too if they're cheap enough. Haven't used either yet to have an opinion .

XTR on both MTBs - why skimp?

Deore/LX on all bikes - why waste money saving weight on a consumable component when it's cheaper to save weight elsewhere? (ignoring idiotic alloy freehub splines)

I had an XTR - the freehub splines wore out before the cassette teeth. How rubbish is that?! Never again.

PG990 replaced it.
XT on the other (8spd) bike.

XT is 260-280g depending on if its 11-32 or 11-34.Best part of 150g lighter than my old PG950.Preety cheap way of saving weight I`d say, given thye have never cost me more than £42.
