Hello,
After using my pedals to put several holes in my shin the other week, I started to look for some knee&shin protection (briefly considered ditching the flats but I'm practicing quite a few skills when I'm out so I like the bail out and avoidance of "cheating" with clip-ins).
I ordered some Fox Enduro Sleeves and the POC VPD 2.0 LONG Knee pads. The latter of which are about twice as heavy and thick as the Fox ones, plus they extend about 2 inches further down the leg.
On first wear (off bike) I started to wonder if the POC ones would be overkill for my purposes but - they feel like they're pretty heavy duty (albeit they're not the DH version of those pads that used to be available).
I ride my local technical trails + trail centres with a few jumps but I also mess around a fair bit, hopping logs (or trying to), practicing car park skills etc. so I fall off a fair amount. Tend to ride out for anywhere between 2 and 4 hours with plenty of up and downhill riding.
Short of putting the POCs on, going for a two hour ride, possibly finding them terrible and then being unable to return then, I was hoping to get some impressions from others who ride similar terrains and have given them a good go. Just to reiterate: this is the LONG version of the VPD 2.0 knee pads rather than the regular ones.
Are they overkill for my purposes?
Cheers,
Ben
Yeah. Bought some never used them more than once. Over the top for everyday riding that involves pedalling. Id wear something like IXS Flow with gform shinnies if you want to pedal.
Hmm, that’s what I was worried about… if they’re no good for pedalling they won’t be any good for me. Thanks
I've owned these for a few years now and wear them regularly. Must admit they do get sweaty and are definately heavy.
After a few rides they became more comfortable mind.
I do have the urge to get lighter weight ones in future but these things have saved my shins a bunch and brushed off any stumbles.
One thing a bit annoying is they can't be split for laundry.
As for pedalling, they are fine after initial couple of uses.
Just done two hours in them. Warm out, but they’re not too sweaty. had to adjust them a couple of times as they did slip a bit and bunch up behind the knees slightly. Seemed very tight at first around the though but have loosened off and actually using the Velcro strap at the top now to keep them in place. Can’t say I don’t notice them when pedalling but they’re a lot more comfortable now already than they were when I first put them on and wore them off the bike briefly.
