Hi there,

Planning to ride this route next weekend with a friend. Would a mountain bike set up for commuting fair OK on the terrain - is it all gravel path or is some of it proper bridleway? The bike has fairly slick Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres on it.

Cheers!

I did the same ride a few years back & you will be fine with commuter tyres. The majority of the route is on quiet roads & tarmac/gravel cycle paths with very few 'extreme' bw trails requiring anything close to proper off road tyres. I had commuter tyres on my Halfords MTB special & they were fine.

It's a great route & very picturesque along the way. I can recommend stopping off at the Yarde Orchard cafe for something to eat & drink on the way.

Sweet! Thanks for the info - just hope for this wind to stop and the sun to come out and it'll be perfect!

Now you've gone and said it, it'll probably snow all weekend now ๐Ÿ™„

Lol - good luck with that one, some of the route is pretty exposed & in wet/windy weather it could be a 'challenging' ride.

I did the stretch from Ilfracombe to Okehampton on a Kaffenback with road tyres the year before last and it was fine. Thinks there's a bit more off road between there and Plymouth but still fine on commuter tyres. We were trying to do it in a day bit didn't start early enough and got a bit lost near the beginning.
