Right fellas,
help a novice bike mechanic fix or advice if poss...
my gears will not change ie my 1-8 is not operating...had a look and nothing is obvious...my Lh side changer is fine but right h side one not....cable seems to be moving, but not operating mechanism...no damage to bike,so would like to ATTEMPT to fix or understand why anyone save me a few quid in repairs pls

Snapped cable?
hang the bike up somehow - tress usually work in the absence of a stand, and if you have a length of bare cable in the run, have the shifter set so the cable is at it's most relaxed, pedal and pull the cable. if you can get the chain to move up and down the block the mech is probably ok, and it's an adjustment thing ( maybe the cable has come loose and pulled through the fixing at the mech ), or the shifter is borked.
if not you have a mech problem.

Something stuck in the cable? - when you flick through the gears do you just get a bunch of loose cable at an exposed part?
